These prayers are for the turning of the calendar, when the old year is closing and a new one is opening up in front of you with its unknown days. You can pray them on New Year’s Eve, on the first morning of January, or any time you sit down to ask God to lead the months ahead. Read them aloud exactly as written, or use them as a starting point and put your own worries and hopes into your own words.
Prayers for a New Year
Father, I come to you at the edge of another year, and I am aware of how much I cannot see. I don’t know what illness, loss, or surprise is waiting, and I don’t know which of my plans will hold. Some of what I carry from last year still feels heavy, the conversations that went badly, the people I miss, the work I didn’t finish. I ask you to take those things from my hands and show me what to leave behind.
Lord, I ask for wisdom in the decisions I’ll face, big ones about work, money, and family, and small ones I make every day without thinking. Keep me honest with myself and gentle with the people I love. Give me patience for the slow weeks and courage for the moments that scare me. Where I have hurt someone, help me make it right, and where someone has hurt me, help me let go of the grip I’ve held on to. Be near to the ones I’m praying for by name, and keep them safe in this new year. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, this year is new, but you are the same. I hand you the days I can see and the ones I can’t. Give me enough grace for today, enough courage for what is ahead, and a heart that trusts you more than it fears. Walk with me into each month, and let me notice your faithfulness along the way. Amen.

How to Pray This Prayer
Many people find it helpful to pray this prayer first thing on January 1, while the house is quiet and the coffee is still hot. Sit at the kitchen table with a notebook beside you, and write down two or three concerns from the past year that you want to give to God. As you read the prayer, you can cross them out one by one, or simply hold the pen while you pray.
You might also pray it with your spouse, a close friend, or your family at a New Year’s gathering, taking turns reading a paragraph each. If you’re praying alone, consider keeping a copy on your phone and returning to it in the hard moments of the months ahead. Let it be a conversation you return to, not a one-time task.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord go before you into this new year and walk beside you through every season. May he keep your going out and your coming in, and give you peace that stays steady when the days are unsettled. May you find his faithfulness waiting for you each morning.
