Acts 2:24 Meaning: How God Raised Jesus From the Power of Death

By

Acts 2:24 says that God raised Jesus from the dead, freeing him from the grip of death because death could not keep him. Peter spoke these words in Jerusalem on the day of Pentecost, addressing a crowd of Jewish men who had gathered from many nations and who had recently witnessed the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. He was announcing the central claim of the Christian message: the one they had helped crucify was alive again.

Whom God raised up, having freed him from the agony of death, because it was not possible that he should be held by it.

What Acts 2:24 Means

The verse begins with “whom God raised up,” which makes the resurrection the action of God the Father. Jesus did not rescue himself; the Father raised him. The phrase “having freed him from the agony of death” uses a word that can mean the birth pains of a woman in labor, suggesting that death was a painful ordeal that could not hold Jesus permanently. Peter’s point is that death lost its hold on him.

The final clause, “because it was not possible that he should be held by it,” gives the reason. Peter is not saying that death was merely unlucky or unlikely to hold Jesus. He is saying that it was impossible, because of who Jesus is and what God had purposed. The verse does not promise that believers will escape every hardship, but it does establish that the grave has been defeated and that God has the final word over death.

The Context of Acts 2:24

Acts was written by Luke, the companion of Paul, traditionally understood to be the author of the Gospel of Luke as well. He wrote it as a second volume, tracing how the message of Jesus spread from Jerusalem outward. The audience in this scene is Jewish, and Peter speaks as a witness who has seen the risen Jesus, drawing on the Hebrew Scriptures to make his case.

Just before verse 24, Peter quoted the prophet Joel about the Spirit being poured out and the call to call on the name of the Lord. Just after, he cites Psalm 16 and attributes its words to David, arguing that David could not have been speaking of himself because his tomb was still known among them. Read in this setting, verse 24 is the hinge of Peter’s argument: the resurrection fulfills what the Scriptures had promised.

Key Phrases in Acts 2:24

1 Corinthians 15:55

“Death, where is your sting? Hades, where is your victory?”

(WEB)

Paul builds on the same triumph over death, mocking its supposed victory and pointing to Christ as the one who wins it. Reading this passage alongside Acts 2:24 shows how the early church understood the resurrection as the decisive defeat of death’s power.

Romans 6:9

Knowing that Christ, being raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no more has dominion over him!

(WEB)

Paul affirms that Christ, once raised, will not die again and that death no longer has mastery over him. This complements Peter’s claim that death could not hold Jesus, emphasizing the permanence of the risen life he now lives.

A Short Prayer From Acts 2:24

Lord God, you raised Jesus from the grip of death and showed that nothing can hold back your purposes. I come to you with fears about what the future holds and with sorrow over those I have lost. Remind me that you are faithful to your Son and to all who trust him. Let the truth that death could not hold Jesus steady my heart today, and help me rest in your power to bring life out of what seems final. Amen.
