BIBLEREADER // ELIZABETH KIM

Acts 2:43 describes a moment when the people around the first Christians were struck with a deep sense of awe, because God was clearly at work through the apostles. Many wonders and signs happened in their ministry, and those who saw them could not easily dismiss what was taking place. Luke, the author of Acts, writes this as part of his account of the early church in Jerusalem shortly after the day of Pentecost.

Fear came on every soul, and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles.

What Acts 2:43 Means

The phrase “fear came on every soul” does not describe terror so much as a reverent amazement. The Greek word behind “fear” can carry the sense of awe before something larger than ordinary life. Luke is describing a community that suddenly sensed God was present and active among them, and that reaction shaped how they listened to the apostles.

The “many wonders and signs” were acts of power that pointed beyond themselves. In Acts, signs are not performed for entertainment. They confirm the message being preached, namely that Jesus is risen and reigning. The verse tells us these events were common enough to be noticed across the city, but it does not give a formula for how such works should happen today or promise that any believer will see them.

What the verse does promise, read carefully, is that God was faithful to the apostles’ witness in a visible way. It does not promise a particular experience for every believer, and it should not be used to measure anyone’s spiritual life by dramatic events. It shows God confirming his word in that generation, and it invites us to trust the same God in ordinary faithfulness.

The Context of Acts 2:43

Acts was written by Luke, the same author who wrote the Gospel bearing his name. Early tradition identifies him as a companion of Paul, and he writes to instruct a reader named Theophilus about the spread of the gospel from Jerusalem outward. The audience was likely a mix of Jewish and Gentile believers, people who needed to see how the church grew from a small Jewish movement into a worldwide family.

The verses just before this one describe Peter’s sermon and the three thousand who were baptized. The verses just after describe the believers sharing their possessions and meeting daily in the temple and in homes. Verse 43 sits in the middle, showing that the wonders confirmed the apostles’ preaching and also shaped the community’s shared life. Read this way, the awe is not an isolated spectacle but part of a larger picture of a people being formed by God’s presence.

Key Phrases in Acts 2:43

Acts 2:42

They continued steadfastly in the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and prayer.

(WEB)

This verse comes just before Acts 2:43 and describes the believers devoted to teaching, fellowship, the breaking of bread, and prayer. Reading it alongside verse 43 shows that the awe and wonders existed within a community committed to the apostles’ teaching and to prayer.

Acts 2:44

All who believed were together, and had all things in common.

(WEB)

This verse follows directly after and describes believers holding everything in common. It shows how the reverence and the signs led to a practical, generous life together, which is the fruit that Luke wants his readers to see.

A Short Prayer From Acts 2:43

Lord, you were at work in the early church in ways that filled people with awe and confirmed the truth of the gospel. Give me a heart that takes your presence seriously, without demanding that every day look like a miracle. Help me trust your faithfulness in ordinary moments and let my life point others to you. Teach me to live with reverence, generosity, and steady hope, knowing that you are still faithful to your word. Amen.
