Acts 4:29 Meaning: Praying for Boldness Under Pressure

By
Elizabeth Kim

Acts 4:29 is a prayer in which the early believers ask God to take notice of the threats against them and to give them the courage to keep speaking his word openly. Rather than asking for safety or for the threats to disappear, they ask for boldness to go on speaking. The prayer is spoken by the church in Jerusalem, shortly after Peter and John were arrested, questioned and warned not to preach in the name of Jesus.

Now, Lord, look at their threats, and grant to your servants to speak your word with all boldness…

What Acts 4:29 Means

The prayer opens with “Now, Lord, look at their threats.” The believers are not pretending the danger is small. They name the threats plainly and bring them before God, the one who is able to see and respond. Prayer here begins with honesty about the situation rather than with a polished version of it.

The request that follows is “grant to your servants to speak your word with all boldness.” Notice what they ask for. They do not ask God to remove the opposition or to silence their accusers. They ask for the ability to keep speaking, and to speak with openness and confidence. The word “boldness” describes a frankness that does not shrink back when speaking costs something.

The verse does not promise that speaking boldly will be easy, painless or free of consequences. Peter and John had just been threatened and released with a warning, and the church would face more hardship later in the book. What the verse offers is a clear picture of how God’s people can ask for courage in the middle of pressure, trusting that he hears and is able to give what is needed.

The Context of Acts 4:29

The book of Acts is traditionally attributed to Luke, the same author who wrote the Gospel bearing his name. He writes as a historian of the early church, tracing how the message about Jesus spread from Jerusalem outward. His intended readers appear to be a Gentile audience, perhaps a man named Theophilus, and his account shows the Spirit at work in the growth of the community.

Just before this verse, the apostles’ opponents are described as kings and rulers gathering against the Lord and his Christ, with Herod and Pontius Pilate named as those who had handled Jesus. The believers read their present trouble through the lens of Psalm 2, seeing the same pattern of earthly power set against God’s purposes. Just after the verse, the place where they are praying is shaken, they are all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they speak the word with boldness. The answer comes swiftly, which reshapes how the request should be understood: the prayer is heard and met with exactly what it asked for.

Key Phrases in Acts 4:29

Acts 4:31

This verse shows the answer to the prayer just as it is recorded, as the place is shaken and the believers are filled with the Holy Spirit and speak the word with boldness. Reading it alongside the prayer shows that the request was heard and met.

2 Timothy 1:7

For God didn’t give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.

(WEB)

Paul reminds Timothy that God has not given a spirit of timidity but of power, love and self-control. This verse echoes the same theme, reminding the reader that courage in speaking for Christ is a gift rooted in God’s own Spirit rather than in human strength.

A Short Prayer From Acts 4:29

Lord, you see the threats and pressures that come against those who belong to you, and nothing about my situation is hidden from your sight. I bring to you the fears that rise when I think about speaking your word openly. I do not ask you to make the difficulty disappear. Instead, grant me the boldness to speak the truth about Jesus with clarity and love, trusting that you are with me in every conversation. Fill me with your Spirit, and let my words honor your name. Amen.
