Acts 5:16 describes a scene in Jerusalem where people from the surrounding towns brought their sick and those troubled by evil spirits to the apostles, and every one of them was healed. The verse shows the early church in the middle of a powerful movement of God, with the apostles acting as channels of Christ’s healing presence. Luke, the author of Acts, is recording this for a community of believers who needed to see that the risen Jesus was still at work through his followers.

The multitude also came together from the cities around Jerusalem, bringing sick people, and those who were tormented by unclean spirits: and they were all healed.

What Acts 5:16 Means

The verse begins with a crowd gathering from the cities around Jerusalem. The word “multitude” tells you this was not a small private event but a large public movement, drawn by reports of what God was doing. People did not come because of a clever campaign. They came because they had heard that healing was happening in the name of Jesus.

The verse then names two groups: those who were physically sick and those “tormented by unclean spirits.” Luke puts them side by side, which suggests that the early church understood both bodily suffering and spiritual oppression as needs that Christ addresses. The final phrase, “they were all healed,” is strong and unqualified. The verse does not say that some improved or that healing was partial. It describes a complete result in that moment.

What the verse does not do is turn into a formula you can apply to every prayer for healing. Acts 5:16 records an event at a specific point in the story of the church, and it shows God’s power at work. It does not promise that every sick person you pray for will be restored in the way they hope. It does affirm that God is able to heal, and that Jesus has authority over sickness and evil.

The Context of Acts 5:16

Acts was written by Luke, traditionally understood as the companion of Paul, and it follows the spread of the gospel from Jerusalem outward. The book was likely written for a readership familiar with Greco-Roman life who needed to understand how a Jewish movement centered on Jesus was growing into a worldwide church. Luke records the apostles’ signs and wonders as evidence that God was present and active among them.

The verses just before this one, Acts 5:13-15, describe the fear and respect the people had for the believers, and how many were added to the Lord. Verses 17-19 show the opposition of the high priest and the Sadducees, who were jealous of the apostles, and God’s rescue of them from prison by an angel. Read in this setting, Acts 5:16 sits between the growing faith of the people and the rising hostility of the authorities. The healings are a sign that God’s kingdom is advancing even while the apostles face persecution.

Key Phrases in Acts 5:16

Mark 16:17-18

17 These signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new languages; 18 they will take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it will in no way hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”

These verses describe signs that will accompany those who believe, including the casting out of demons and the healing of the sick. Reading them alongside Acts 5:16 shows that the early church understood healing and deliverance as part of the ministry Jesus gave his followers.

James 5:14-15

14 Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the assembly, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord, 15 and the prayer of faith will heal him who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.

James gives practical instruction for praying over the sick, calling for the elders to pray and anoint with oil in the name of the Lord. This passage pairs well with Acts 5:16 by showing how the community of faith continued to pray for healing in the years after the apostles’ ministry in Jerusalem.

A Short Prayer From Acts 5:16

Lord Jesus, you have power over sickness and every evil that oppresses people. I bring to you the people I love who are struggling in body or in spirit, and I ask for your mercy on them. Give me the faith of those who carried their sick friends to the apostles, believing that you are able to act. Teach me to trust your goodness even when I do not understand your timing, and make me a faithful friend who points others to you. Amen.
