Acts 6:4 is the apostles’ declaration that they will keep giving themselves to prayer and to the teaching of God’s word, even while the church sorts out a practical problem. They refuse to let the daily work of distributing food crowd out the work they were called to do. The words are spoken by the twelve apostles in Jerusalem to the whole gathering of disciples, shortly after the church’s rapid growth had exposed a dispute over how widows were being cared for.

But we will continue steadfastly in prayer and in the ministry of the word.”

What Acts 6:4 Means

The phrase “we will continue steadfastly” tells you this was a settled commitment, not a passing preference. The apostles were not announcing a new resolve born of crisis. They were restating a rhythm of life that had already shaped the early church: gathering to pray and to hear the teaching of Jesus as passed on through the apostles.

“In prayer and in the ministry of the word” names two activities that the apostles placed at the center of their calling. Prayer means seeking God directly and depending on him. The ministry of the word means proclaiming and explaining the message about Jesus, which in that setting meant speaking and teaching publicly. The verse does not say the apostles would never handle practical needs. It says they would not let practical needs become the thing that pushed the word and prayer aside.

The verse also does not promise that ministry will always run smoothly or that every need will be met by the apostles personally. It shows a decision about priorities, and the rest of the passage shows how the church responded by appointing others to oversee the food distribution.

The Context of Acts 6:4

Acts was written by Luke, traditionally understood as the companion of Paul, and it records the early spread of the gospel from Jerusalem outward. Luke wrote to present a continuing account of what the risen Jesus began to do through his Spirit-filled followers. The verse sits in the early chapters, when the church was still centered in Jerusalem and the apostles were its visible leaders.

Just before the verse, Luke describes a complaint from Hellenist believers, Greek-speaking Jews, that their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution. The apostles then ask the church to choose seven men of good reputation to handle this work. Read in that setting, Acts 6:4 is not a dismissal of practical care. It is the apostles explaining why they will entrust that care to others so that their own calling is protected. The verse is the hinge between a problem and its solution.

Key Phrases in Acts 6:4

Colossians 3:16

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; in all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your heart to the Lord.

(WEB)

This verse urges believers to let the word of Christ dwell among them richly, teaching and admonishing one another. It shows the same concern for the word shaping the life of the church that Acts 6:4 expresses in the apostles’ own practice.

Acts 2:42

They continued steadfastly in the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and prayer.

(WEB)

This early description of the believers’ life names the apostles’ teaching and prayer as the foundation of their fellowship. It shows that the commitment the apostles restate in Acts 6:4 was already the pattern of the young church.

A Short Prayer From Acts 6:4

Lord, you have given your church the word of life and the gift of prayer, and I ask that you would keep me faithful to both. When my days fill with tasks that seem urgent, help me remember what matters most. Give me a steady heart that returns to you in prayer and to your word with patience and gladness. Where I am tempted to let good work crowd out your work in me, gently redirect my steps. Make my service rooted in your truth and my prayers open to your leading, for your glory and the good of others. Amen.
