Acts 6:4 means that the apostles decided their core calling was prayer and the teaching of God’s word, and that they would not let practical work crowd those priorities out of their lives. The verse records the apostles’ stated plan when the early church faced a growing practical problem with the daily distribution of food. It is spoken by the twelve apostles, addressed to the whole body of disciples in Jerusalem, as they proposed a way to share the load.

But we will continue steadfastly in prayer and in the ministry of the word.”

What Acts 6:4 Means

The phrase “we will continue steadfastly” describes a settled, ongoing commitment rather than an occasional habit. The apostles are not saying they will pray now and then when time allows. They are choosing a steady rhythm and holding to it, which is what the word “steadfastly” conveys in everyday terms: showing up again and again, even when other demands press in.

The pairing of “prayer” and “the ministry of the word” tells you what they considered central. Prayer is their direct communication with God, and “the ministry of the word” refers to their service of teaching and proclaiming the message about Jesus. Together these two activities formed the heart of their work. The verse does not promise that prayer and teaching will remove every difficulty, nor does it claim that other good work is worthless. It simply sets out where the apostles would place their own time and energy.

The Context of Acts 6:4

The book of Acts was written by Luke, the same author who wrote the Gospel of Luke, and it traces how the message of Jesus spread from Jerusalem outward. In Acts 6 the church has grown quickly, and a complaint arises that Greek-speaking widows are being overlooked in the daily distribution of food. The apostles recognize that they cannot personally manage every practical task and still give themselves fully to prayer and teaching.

Just before the verse, the apostles call the disciples together and ask them to select seven men of good reputation, full of the Spirit and wisdom, to oversee this work. Verse 4 is their explanation of why this shift makes sense. Read in that setting, the verse is less about a private spiritual schedule and more about a community deciding how to divide responsibilities so that the whole church can flourish.

Key Phrases in Acts 6:4

Mark 1:35

Early in the morning, while it was still dark, he rose up and went out, and departed into a deserted place, and prayed there.

(WEB)

This verse shows Jesus rising early to pray in a quiet place even after a busy day of ministry. It offers a picture of the same priority the apostles describe, where prayer remains the foundation for active service and teaching.

2 Timothy 2:15

Give diligence to present yourself approved by God, a workman who doesn’t need to be ashamed, properly handling the Word of Truth.

(WEB)

Paul urges Timothy to handle the word of truth carefully and skillfully. This connects directly with the apostles’ commitment to the ministry of the word, reminding you that teaching God’s message requires diligence and care.

A Short Prayer From Acts 6:4

Lord, you know how easily my days fill with tasks that seem urgent but do not last. Help me to set my heart on prayer and on your word, and give me the steadiness to return to them again and again. Show me where I have let good work crowd out the things that matter most, and give me the wisdom to share responsibilities with others when I need to. Let my service flow from a life rooted in you, and keep my attention fixed on your faithfulness each day. Amen.
