BIBLEREADER // ELIZABETH GARCIA

Acts 7:20 tells us that Moses was born at a dangerous time for the Hebrew people, and that he was unusually beautiful as a child. His family hid him for three months in their home, a quiet act of protection in a season of fear. The words are spoken by Stephen, a follower of Jesus, as he gives a long speech to the Jewish council in Jerusalem just before his death.

At that time Moses was born, and was exceedingly handsome. He was nourished three months in his father’s house.

What Acts 7:20 Means

“At that time” points back to the situation described in the verses before it, when a new Pharaoh had begun to oppress the Israelites and ordered their newborn boys to be killed. Into that threat, Moses is born. The verse does not present his birth as a random event. Stephen places it at the center of a story in which God is quietly at work.

“Exceedingly handsome” is an unusual phrase. In the wider tradition of this passage, it signals that Moses was no ordinary child, and that something about him drew attention and set him apart. Stephen uses this detail to show that God’s purposes were already shaping the life of this child.

The verse does not explain every detail of how the family managed to hide him, nor does it promise that God will always act in such visible ways in the lives of ordinary people. It simply records the fact and lets the reader see that God’s care for his people was present even in the darkest days.

The Context of Acts 7:20

Acts was written by Luke, the same author who wrote the Gospel that bears his name, and it is addressed to the early church and its wider readers, showing how the message of Jesus spread from Jerusalem outward. Stephen’s speech in chapter 7 is a summary of Israel’s history, recounting God’s dealings with Abraham, Joseph, and Moses before turning to the hard charge that his listeners had resisted the Spirit just as their ancestors had.

Just before this verse, Stephen describes the suffering of the Israelites under oppression. Just after it, he tells how Moses was taken in by Pharaoh’s daughter and raised in Egypt’s palace. Read in that setting, the verse becomes a hinge: the threat of death gives way to a providential rescue, and the baby who should have been lost becomes the instrument through whom God would deliver his people.

Key Phrases in Acts 7:20

Exodus 2:2

The woman conceived, and bore a son. When she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him three months.

(WEB)

This verse, from the original account of Moses’ birth, describes his mother seeing that he was a fine child and hiding him for three months, which gives the background that Stephen summarizes in Acts 7:20 and shows the same care and courage at work.

Hebrews 11:23

By faith, Moses, when he was born, was hidden for three months by his parents, because they saw that he was a beautiful child, and they were not afraid of the king’s commandment.

(WEB)

The writer of Hebrews names the faith of Moses’ parents, who hid him because they saw that he was beautiful and were not afraid of the king’s order, so this verse highlights the trust behind the family’s quiet act of protection.

A Short Prayer From Acts 7:20

Lord, you were at work in the life of Moses long before anyone could see what you were doing, and you did not let the threat of death have the final word. Help me to trust your timing when my circumstances feel dangerous or uncertain. Give me courage to act faithfully in the small place you have given me, and let my ordinary choices become part of your larger purposes. Keep watch over the people I love and the future I cannot see. Amen.
