Acts 7:3 Meaning: God Calls Abraham to Leave and Trust

Acts 7:3 records God’s call to Abraham to leave his homeland and family and move to a land God would show him. The verse means that God’s promises often begin with a step of obedience into the unknown, before the destination is fully visible. Stephen, the first Christian martyr, speaks these words during his defense before the Jewish council in Jerusalem, recounting Israel’s history to his hearers.

And said to him, ‘Get out of your land, and from your relatives, and come into a land which I will show you.’

What Acts 7:3 Means

The verse begins with God’s command: “Get out of your land, and from your relatives.” Abraham is told to leave both his country and his extended family. Leaving home in the ancient world meant losing protection, economic security, and social identity, so the command asked for real sacrifice.

The second part, “come into a land which I will show you,” is what makes the command an act of faith. God does not hand Abraham a map. He promises to reveal the destination along the way. Abraham had to trust the one who called him rather than a plan he could inspect in advance.

The verse does not promise ease, safety, or a quick arrival. It describes a call and a pattern of trust. Stephen’s point is that God worked through Abraham’s obedience long before the nation of Israel existed, and that God’s purposes are not confined to one place or one temple.

The Context of Acts 7:3

The Book of Acts was written by Luke, the same author who wrote the Gospel of Luke, and it is addressed to a Greek-speaking believer named Theophilus. It traces how the message about Jesus spread from Jerusalem to the wider world. Stephen’s speech in chapter 7 comes at a tense moment, as the high priest asks whether the charges against him are true.

In the verses just before, the high priest questions Stephen, and in the verses that follow Stephen traces Abraham’s descendants through Egypt and into the wider story of Moses. The surrounding history shows that God acted in Israel’s story long before the temple, the law, and the land were established. That context helps explain why the call to Abraham matters so much in Stephen’s argument: God’s activity is not limited to the place where Stephen’s listeners assume it lives.

Key Phrases in Acts 7:3

Hebrews 11:8

By faith, Abraham, when he was called, obeyed to go out to the place which he was to receive for an inheritance. He went out, not knowing where he went.

This verse looks back on Abraham’s departure and names it as an act of faith. It shows that the writer of Hebrews saw in Abraham’s obedience a model for trusting God when the destination is unknown.

Genesis 12:1

Now the LORD said to Abram, “Leave your country, and your relatives, and your father’s house, and go to the land that I will show you.

This is the original account of God’s call to Abraham in the Old Testament. Reading it alongside Acts 7:3 shows how Stephen’s summary builds directly on the earlier story and highlights its central message of obedience and promise.

A Short Prayer From Acts 7:3

Lord, you called Abraham out of what was familiar and led him toward a land he had not yet seen. Help me to trust you when the next step is unclear. Show me where you are leading, and give me the courage to leave behind whatever holds me back from following you. Let my obedience rest on your faithfulness rather than on my own sense of security. Amen.
