A bedtime prayer for direction is a way to hand the unanswered questions of your day to God before you sleep. It is most helpful when you are facing a decision, a change, or a season where the next step is unclear. You can read the prayer below aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words in the same spirit.

Bedtime Prayer for Direction

Father, the day is ending, and I am bringing you the things I could not settle while the light was still on. I do not know yet which way to go with the job decision in front of me, or whether the conversation I have been avoiding needs to happen this week. I have made lists and asked people for advice, and my mind still runs in circles. Tonight I stop trying to force the answer.

Lord, you know the road ahead better than I do. You see the choices I cannot see from here, and you know what my family needs and what my own heart needs. Quiet my worry so that I can rest. Show me the next faithful step when I wake, and give me the courage to take it even if I cannot yet see the whole path. Guard my sleep, and let me trust that you are awake and at work while I rest. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am tired and I do not know what to do next. Please give me direction for tomorrow and peace for tonight. Show me the one step I need to take, and keep my mind from running ahead of you. Thank you that I do not have to find the way on my own. Hold me through the night, and lead me when morning comes. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Pray these words when your own understanding feels like the only guide you have. Ask God to help you stop leaning on your own reasoning alone and to make your paths straight as you look to him.

Psalm 119:105

Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path.

(WEB)

Use this verse when you need light for the next step rather than the whole road. Thank God that his word lights the immediate path, even when the distance is hidden in the dark.

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

This is a verse to pray as you lie down. Ask God to grant you the kind of rest that comes from trusting him with what you cannot control, so that sleep becomes an act of faith.

Isaiah 30:21

And when you turn to the right hand, and when you turn to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way. Walk in it.”

(WEB)

Pray this when you want to hear God’s guidance clearly. Ask him to make his voice recognizable to you and to give you a sense of which way to turn when the choices feel similar.

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

(WEB)

Bring this verse to God when you feel foolish for not knowing what to do. Ask him to give you wisdom generously, without holding back, and to help you receive it with a humble heart.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer in the last few minutes before you turn out the light, ideally in the same bed where you sleep, so that the body and the mind learn to connect rest with trust. If your hands feel restless, hold a pen and write down the one decision you are carrying. Then set the paper aside and let it stay there until morning. Many people find it helpful to keep a notebook on the nightstand for this purpose.

You might also pray this prayer with a spouse, a close friend, or a family member who is walking through the same season. Read it together, take turns with the Scripture, and then let each person name one thing they are releasing for the night. Shared prayer makes the burden lighter and reminds you that you are not carrying the question alone.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps watch over you tonight grant you deep and untroubled sleep. May he make the next step clear when morning comes, and may he give you courage to walk it without fear. Rest in the knowledge that the one who guides you never sleeps.
