BIBLEREADER // SOPHIE GARDNER

This bedtime prayer is for the moment when the day has been heavy and you need hope to settle over you before sleep. Pray it in the evening, once the lights are low and the day’s noise has quieted, whether you read it aloud word for word or use it as a starting point for your own words. Either way, it gives you a way to hand the day to God and ask Him for a steady hope to carry into the night.

Bedtime Prayer for Finding Hope

Lord, I come to you at the end of this day tired in body and tired in heart. Some things went wrong today, and some things I still cannot see a way through. I have worried about money, about the people I love, about my health, and about whether I am doing any of this well. Tonight I set those worries down and admit that I cannot carry them through the night on my own strength.

Father, give me hope that is steady and not based on how the day went. Remind me that you have not stopped being faithful just because my circumstances are uncertain. Let the hope I have in you outlast the hard moments I have lived through today. Where I feel discouraged, lift my eyes back toward you, and where I feel alone, show me that you are near.

Watch over me while I sleep. Guard my mind from replaying every fear, and give me rest that is deep and real. When I wake, let me find that your mercies are new, as they always are. I trust you with tomorrow, and I trust you with tonight. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am tired and my hope feels thin tonight. Be my hope when mine runs out. Quiet the fears in my mind and remind me that you are awake and faithful while I rest. Keep me safe through the night and give me hope for the morning, because you are good and you keep your promises. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 42:11

Why are you in despair, my soul? Why are you disturbed within me? Hope in God! For I shall still praise him, the saving help of my countenance, and my God.

(WEB)

Read this verse slowly and let the question in it become your own: why are you cast down, my soul? Then answer your soul with the reminder that hope belongs in God. Pray it when your mind is restless and you need to speak truth to your own heart.

Romans 15:13

Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope, in the power of the Holy Spirit.

(WEB)

Paul prays this blessing over the church, asking God to fill believers with joy and peace. Pray it for yourself by name, asking that the Spirit would overflow your heart with hope as you rest in trust.

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

This verse speaks directly to the act of lying down to sleep. Pray it as you settle into bed, placing your safety in the Lord’s care for the hours ahead.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Jeremiah wrote these words from the ruins of a broken city, and they still hold. Pray them when yesterday’s failures feel like they will repeat, and ask God to show you that his mercy begins again each morning.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

The psalmist affirms that the one who watches over Israel never sleeps. Pray this as an act of trust, letting the truth that God stays awake for you ease the weight of your need for control.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a set time each evening, perhaps right after you turn off the lights or while you sit on the edge of your bed before lying down. Keep a small notebook on the nightstand so you can jot down the specific worries you name in the prayer, and then read them back to God the next night as an honest record of his faithfulness over time.

If you share a home with a spouse, a child, or a friend who is also struggling, you might pray this prayer together, taking turns reading a paragraph each. Holding a hand or resting a palm on the back of a sleeping child can make the words feel tangible. Praying it with someone else also reminds you that hope is something you can carry for each other.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who never sleeps keep you under his watch tonight. May he steady your heart with a hope that does not depend on the day behaving, and may you wake to find his mercies fresh and waiting for you. Rest well, for you are held.
