BIBLEREADER // SOPHIE GARDNER

This bedtime prayer for love is for the quiet hour when the day is finished and your heart is still full of its noise. It helps you release what you carried, ask God to fill the empty places with his steady love, and rest in the assurance that you are known. Pray it aloud as written, or let it be a starting point and put your own names and worries into the blanks.

Bedtime Prayer for Love

Father, the day is ending and I bring it to you as it is. Some of it went well, and I thank you for those moments: the kind word from a friend, the meal that tasted good, the work that came together. Some of it did not go well. I was short with someone I care about, I felt unseen by the people closest to me, and I carried worries about money, my health, and the children I love so much that I could not put them down. Forgive what needs forgiving. Show me where I failed to love well, and help me see it without shame.

Lord, I ask you to pour your love into the places I feel empty tonight. Let me know, without any doubt, that I am loved by you before I earned anything and whether or not I feel it. Give love to the people in my home and at my table, and make me patient with the ones who are hard to love. Guard the relationship that has been strained, and soften the hearts involved, mine included. Hold the ones who are far away and the ones who are grieving. As I lie down, quiet my mind and let me sleep in the peace of your presence. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am tired and my heart feels thin tonight. Fill me with your love so I can love others tomorrow. Forgive me for the ways I fell short today, and help me forgive the people who hurt me. Hold the ones I worry about and the ones I cannot reach. Let me rest in knowing I belong to you. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 136:1

Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; for his loving kindness endures forever.

(WEB)

Begin your evening by thanking God for his goodness. Repeating this line reminds you that his love has been steady through every ordinary day, including this one.

1 John 4:19

We love him, because he first loved us.

(WEB)

When you feel you have not loved well, pray this verse to remember that love begins with God’s love for you. Ask him to let that love shape how you treat others tomorrow.

Romans 8:38-39

38 For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from God’s love, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

(WEB)

Use this passage to name your fears one by one and set each against the claim that nothing can separate you from God’s love. It is a good prayer for an anxious night.

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as you settle into bed, placing your sleep and your safety in God’s hands. It turns the act of lying down into an act of trust.

1 Corinthians 13:4-7

4 Love is patient and is kind; love doesn’t envy. Love doesn’t brag, is not proud, 5 doesn’t behave itself inappropriately, doesn’t seek its own way, is not provoked, takes no account of evil; 6 doesn’t rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; 7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

(WEB)

Read this passage slowly and ask God to show you which qualities of love you most need to grow in. Let each line become a specific request for the people you live with.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying this prayer in the last few minutes before you turn out the light, once your phone is face down and the room is dim. If you share a bed or a house, you might pray it together, taking turns with the lines about the people you love. Keeping a small notebook on the nightstand helps too, so you can write down the names and burdens you pray over and come back to them in the morning.

If your hands need something to do, hold a warm mug, rest a palm on your chest, or fold a piece of laundry while you speak the words. Parents can pray it over children as they tuck them in, changing the first person to “Lord, I ask you to…” for the child’s sake. Someone who lives alone can light a small lamp and pray it aloud, which often makes the silence feel less empty.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord, who loved you first, fill your heart with his steady love tonight. May he guard your sleep, quiet every worry, and wake you with a fresh measure of grace for the people around you. Rest well, for you are held.
