BIBLEREADER // SOPHIE GARDNER

This bedtime prayer is for the end of a working day, when the emails are closed, the tasks are unfinished, and your mind keeps returning to the office, the shift, the deadline or the conversation that went badly. Pray it in the evening, once the day’s work is behind you and before you sleep. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Bedtime Prayer for My Work

Lord, thank You for this day and for the work You gave me to do in it. Some of it went well, and some of it did not. I made mistakes, I was short with people, and there are things I meant to finish that are still sitting unfinished. I bring all of it to You now. Forgive me where I fell short, help me to learn from what went wrong, and thank You for the people who helped me along the way, including those who never knew how much they helped.

I release the worries I have been carrying about my job, my boss, my coworkers and my future. Tomorrow’s meetings, reports and decisions are not mine to carry alone tonight. Give me rest in You so that my sleep is not spent rehearsing arguments or rewriting emails. Where I need wisdom, grant it. Where I need courage to speak up, grant that too. Watch over my body and mind while I sleep, and let me wake with a clearer head and a steadier heart. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am tired and my mind is still at work. Take the day from my hands and hold it for me. Forgive what I did badly, and thank You for what went well. Quiet my thoughts, guard my sleep and help me trust that tomorrow’s work will be given the same care You have given today. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Read this slowly before you close your eyes. Pray it as a statement of trust, thanking God that your rest does not depend on finishing everything, and that He keeps watch while you sleep.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

This verse speaks to the habit of working late and worrying through the night. Ask God to teach you where your effort should stop, so that rest becomes an act of trust rather than a reward you have to earn.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Jesus speaks to those who are weary and burdened. Bring your work-weariness to Him by name, and ask Him to take the parts of the load that you were never meant to carry on your own.

Colossians 3:23

And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men…

(WEB)

Paul’s words reframe ordinary labor as service to the Lord. Pray this as you think back on the day, asking God to forgive the lazy or careless work and to help you do tomorrow’s tasks with honest care.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul names anxiety and then points to prayer as its remedy. Use this passage to hand over each specific worry about your job, one at a time, and to ask God for the peace that guards your heart and mind through the night.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a set time each evening, perhaps after you wash up, change clothes or turn off your work phone. Sit in a chair or on the edge of your bed rather than lying down, so that you stay awake long enough to pray properly. If you have a notebook, write down the one or two concerns that keep returning and read them aloud at the end of the prayer, then close the notebook as a sign that you have given them to God.

If you share a home with a spouse, roommate or family member, you can ask them to pray the prayer over you, or to pray it together with you. Some people keep a hand on a desk drawer, a work badge or a cup of tea while they pray, something simple that marks the transition from the working day to rest. Let the prayer be short on nights when you are exhausted, and longer on nights when you need more time to lay things down.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps watch over His people be your rest tonight. May the work of your hands be offered to Him, and may the weight of tomorrow be lifted from you while you sleep. May you wake refreshed, ready for what the day brings, knowing you are held by a faithful God who never tires.
