BIBLEREADER // ISABELLA WALKER

This list gathers Bible scriptures about courage for anyone who needs strength to face something frightening, whether that is a hard conversation, a diagnosis, a new season or a daily fear that keeps returning. Each verse points to the same source of courage: a God who is present, faithful and able to act. Read them slowly, and let each one answer a specific worry rather than a general sense of unease.

Verses for the Morning Before a Hard Day

Some days courage is needed before you have even left the house. These verses speak to the fear that rises early, when the day ahead looks heavier than your strength.

Joshua 1:9

Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

(WEB)

God gave this command to Joshua just before he led a nation into unknown territory. Before you start the day, say the reason for the command out loud: the Lord is with you wherever you go. Then name the one task you are dreading and bring it to God before the first call or email.

Psalm 27:1

The LORD is my light and my salvation. Whom shall I fear? The LORD is the strength of my life. Of whom shall I be afraid?

(WEB)

David begins this psalm by naming who he is afraid of and then answers with who God is. Try writing one sentence that starts with “The Lord is my…” and fill it with the thing you need most today, such as light, strength or refuge.

Deuteronomy 31:6

Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid or scared of them; for the LORD your God himself is who goes with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you.”

(WEB)

Moses spoke these words to a people about to face enemies they could not defeat alone. Notice the promise that God will not leave you. Set a reminder on your phone for midday that simply says “He has not left me,” and let it interrupt the spiral of worry.

Verses for Facing Fear in the Middle of Trouble

When fear is already here, these verses remind you that God has not stepped back from the situation. They are for the moment when the news is bad or the outcome is still unclear.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

God speaks directly to an anxious people and gives three promises in one breath: I am with you, I am your God, I will strengthen you. When fear is loud, repeat the verse slowly, pausing after each promise, and notice which one your heart most needs to hear.

Psalm 56:3

When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you.

(WEB)

David wrote this in a moment of real danger, yet he chose to speak trust rather than only describe fear. Acknowledge honestly what frightens you, then write a single sentence beginning “When I am afraid, I will trust…” and finish it in your own words.

2 Timothy 1:7

For God didn’t give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.

(WEB)

Paul reminded Timothy, a young leader who was tempted to shrink back, that God’s gifts include power, love and a sound mind. Ask yourself which of those three you are short on today, and pray specifically for that gift rather than for the fear to vanish.

Psalm 46:1-2

1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. 2 Therefore we won’t be afraid, though the earth changes, though the mountains are shaken into the heart of the seas…

(WEB)

These verses describe a world where the ground shakes and mountains fall, yet the psalmist still declares that God is a refuge. When the situation feels unstable, look at something solid nearby and let it remind you of the steadiness of God.

Verses for Speaking Up and Standing Firm

Courage is not only for crises. It is also needed when you must say the true thing, keep a commitment or refuse to go along with what is wrong. These verses address those quieter acts of nerve.

Joshua 1:7

Only be strong and very courageous. Be careful to observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded you. Don’t turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may have good success wherever you go.

(WEB)

Before the Lord commands courage, he asks for faithfulness to his word. Strength here is tied to obedience and steady attention to what is true. Pick one small area where you have been tempted to compromise and decide one concrete step toward honesty this week.

Acts 4:29

Now, Lord, look at their threats, and grant to your servants to speak your word with all boldness…

(WEB)

After being threatened, the early believers did not ask God to remove the danger. They asked for boldness to keep speaking. If you need to speak up at work or at home, pray this exact request before the conversation begins, and then go in with words prepared ahead of time.

Ephesians 6:10

Finally, be strong in the Lord, and in the strength of his might.

(WEB)

Paul points to the Lord’s strength, not your own, as the source for standing firm. When you feel too small for the task, speak the words “in the Lord” over your next step, and let that remind you that you are not standing alone.

1 Corinthians 16:13

Watch! Stand firm in the faith! Be courageous! Be strong!

(WEB)

Paul gives a short list of commands for a church under pressure: stay alert, stand firm, act like mature people, and be strong. Choose one of these four to practice today and look for one moment where it applies.

Verses for Courage in Ordinary Faithfulness

Many of the hardest moments are quiet ones: continuing to pray when no answer comes, loving people who are difficult, or doing good work no one applauds. These verses honor courage that rarely makes the news.

Psalm 31:24

Be strong, and let your heart take courage, all you who hope in the LORD.

(WEB)

David closes this psalm by calling those who hope in the Lord to be strong and let their hearts take courage. Courage here comes from waiting well. When you feel tired of waiting, name one thing you are waiting for and trust God with its timing.

Galatians 6:9

Let us not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don’t give up.

(WEB)

Paul writes to believers who are worn out from doing good. He promises a harvest in due time if they do not give up. Think of one act of faithfulness you have wanted to quit, and decide on a small way to keep going this week.

Hebrews 13:6

So that with good courage we say, “The Lord is my helper. I will not fear. What can man do to me?”

(WEB)

This verse gives a confident answer to the question of what people can do to us. The writer draws it from God’s promise never to abandon his people. When someone’s opinion weighs heavily on you, say this verse aloud and name the person whose approval you need to release.

Philippians 1:6

Being confident of this very thing, that he who began a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.

(WEB)

Paul is confident that the God who started a good work will finish it. This gives courage to keep going on long projects, healing or growth. Write down one area where you feel you are only partway through and thank God that the work is his as well as yours.

Psalm 118:6

The LORD is on my side. I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?

(WEB)

The psalmist says that because the Lord is on his side, he will not fear what people can do. Use this verse in the moments when a critic or a crowd seems to hold power. Pause, breathe, and remind yourself whose opinion ultimately counts.

How to Use These Verses

Write three or four of these verses on index cards or a note on your phone, and place them where you will see them during your routine: on the bathroom mirror, the car dashboard or the front of your planner. Choose verses that match the fears you face most often, and rotate them when they start to feel familiar. Reading a verse ten times in a week in a specific place builds a habit of turning toward God under pressure.

Pray the verses rather than only reading them. Turn each promise into a sentence addressed to God, such as “Lord, you are with me in this meeting.” When you pray this way, the verse becomes a conversation rather than a reminder. Return to the same few verses during hard seasons, and let them become familiar companions for the times when your own words run out.

A Short Prayer for Courage

Lord, you know the fears I carry today, some named and some still hidden. I do not ask you to make the hard things disappear all at once. I ask you to be near me in them, to remind me of your promises, and to give me the nerve to take the next faithful step. Where I am tempted to shrink back, strengthen my heart. Where I need to speak truth, give me words. Where I am weary of doing good, renew my resolve. Thank you that you do not leave me alone. Amen.
