BIBLEREADER // STEVEN MITCHELL

This list gives you Bible verses about heaven, arranged by the moments when the hope of heaven is most needed: grief, long days of waiting, fear of death, and the ordinary weariness of living in a broken world. It is written for Christians who want Scripture they can read slowly and carry with them. Across these verses, the same thread runs through: heaven is a real place prepared by God, Christ has gone ahead to make it ready, and the people of God will be with him there.

Verses for Grieving a Loved One

Loss makes heaven feel both far away and very close. The verses in this group speak to people who have said goodbye to a parent, child, spouse or friend who trusted Christ, and who want to know what lies beyond the grave.

John 14:1-3

1 “Don’t let your heart be troubled. Believe in God. Believe also in me. 2 In my Father’s house are many homes. If it weren’t so, I would have told you. I am going to prepare a place for you. 3 If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and will receive you to myself; that where I am, you may be there also.

Jesus speaks these words to disciples who were frightened about losing him. Read them slowly on the day you visit a grave or sit in an empty room, and then name one person you are grieving and tell the Lord that you trust he is preparing a place for them.

1 Thessalonians 4:13-14

13 But we don’t want you to be ignorant, brothers, concerning those who have fallen asleep, so that you don’t grieve like the rest, who have no hope. 14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul writes to a church that was grieving its dead and unsure what would happen to them. He does not tell them not to grieve, only not to grieve as people with no hope. Keep this verse on your phone for the moments when grief suddenly returns in the middle of an ordinary errand.

Revelation 21:4

He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; neither will there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain, any more. The first things have passed away.”

(WEB)

This verse describes the end of every tear in the presence of God. When you feel the sting of missing someone, read it aloud and let it name the sorrow you are carrying while looking ahead to the day it will be fully wiped away.

Verses for Facing Your Own Mortality

Thinking about dying is not a morbid habit for a believer, and Scripture speaks to it directly. These verses are for the sleepless hour, the medical appointment that brings fear, or the quiet question of what happens when your own life ends.

Philippians 1:21-23

21 For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. 22 But if I live on in the flesh, this will bring fruit from my work; yet I don’t know what I will choose. 23 But I am in a dilemma between the two, having the desire to depart and be with Christ, which is far better.

(WEB)

Paul writes from prison, uncertain whether he will live or die, and he speaks of departing to be with Christ as far better. Consider what it would mean to hold your own life with that kind of open hand, and write one sentence in your journal about what you most look forward to in his presence.

2 Corinthians 5:1

For we know that if the earthly house of our tent is dissolved, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal, in the heavens.

(WEB)

Paul describes the body as a tent that will be taken down and a building from God that lasts forever. When you look at your aging body in the mirror, let this picture remind you that what you are living in now is temporary and that a sturdier home is being prepared.

Psalm 23:6

Surely goodness and loving kindness shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the LORD’s house forever.

(WEB)

David ends his shepherd psalm by saying he will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. Pray this verse slowly at bedtime, letting its final words shape the last thoughts you have before sleep.

Verses for Long Seasons of Waiting and Weariness

Some days the world presses in hard and the future seems to stretch on without relief. These verses help you lift your eyes to the promise of a home where rest is complete and the struggle has ended.

Hebrews 11:13-16

13 These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them and embraced them from afar, and having confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. 14 For those who say such things make it clear that they are seeking a country of their own. 15 If indeed they had been thinking of that country from which they went out, they would have had enough time to return. 16 But now they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed of them, to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.

(WEB)

The writer describes faithful people who lived as strangers on earth because they were looking for a better country. Use this passage when you feel out of place among people who do not share your values, and remind yourself that your true citizenship is in heaven.

Matthew 6:19-21

19 “Don’t lay up treasures for yourselves on the earth, where moth and rust consume, and where thieves break through and steal; 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consume, and where thieves don’t break through and steal; 21 for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

(WEB)

Jesus teaches that treasure stored in heaven cannot be destroyed by moth, rust or thieves. When you feel tempted to measure success by what you own, ask yourself what you are storing up that will last beyond this life, and give something away this week as an act of trust.

Colossians 3:1-2

1 If then you were raised together with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated on the right hand of God. 2 Set your mind on the things that are above, not on the things that are on the earth.

(WEB)

Paul tells believers to set their minds on things above because they have been raised with Christ. Practice this by pausing at midday, turning your thoughts toward Jesus for a minute, and asking him to shape what you dwell on in the afternoon.

Verses on the Hope of Being With God

At the heart of heaven is not only a place but a Person. These verses point to the promise that God himself will dwell with his people and that we will see him face to face.

Revelation 22:3-5

3 There will be no curse any more. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will serve him. 4 They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. 5 There will be no night, and they need no lamp light; for the Lord God will illuminate them. They will reign forever and ever.

(WEB)

This passage describes servants who will see God’s face and reign with him forever. Read it when you are discouraged about serving quietly and unnoticed, and remember that the faithful work done in hidden places is known to him.

1 Corinthians 13:12

For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I will know fully, even as I was also fully known.

(WEB)

Paul says that now we see only a dim reflection, but then we will see face to face. When your understanding of God feels incomplete, let this verse assure you that a fuller knowledge is coming and that you are known even now.

John 17:24

Father, I desire that they also whom you have given me be with me where I am, that they may see my glory, which you have given me, for you loved me before the foundation of the world.

(WEB)

In his prayer, Jesus asks that those the Father has given him may be with him where he is and see his glory. Pray this verse for someone you love who is still far from faith, asking that they too would one day be with the Savior.

How to Use These Verses

Write a few of these verses on an index card or in the notes app of your phone, and keep them where you will see them: on the bathroom mirror, beside your bed, or in the car. Choose one verse for each week and read it aloud each morning, then return to it when the same feeling arises later in the day. Repetition helps Scripture move from something you read to something you live from.

Pray the verses instead of only reading them. Turn a verse into a sentence addressed to God, such as “Lord, you are preparing a place for me,” and speak it when you are anxious, grieving or tired. Many people find it helpful to keep one verse on heaven ready for funerals, hospital visits and the anniversaries of loss, so that hope is close at hand when it is hardest to find.

A Short Prayer for Heaven

Lord Jesus, you have promised that you are going ahead to prepare a place for those who belong to you, and I hold onto that promise today. When I think of the people I have lost, comfort my heart with the certainty that they are with you and that no tear will last forever. When I think of my own days ending, make me unafraid, remembering that to be with you is far better than anything this world can offer. Shape my thoughts toward the home you are preparing, and help me to live now as a citizen of that kingdom. Amen.
