BIBLEREADER // STEVEN MITCHELL

This list gives you Bible verses for making decisions, whether you are weighing a job offer, a move, a relationship, or a choice that feels too heavy to carry alone. Each verse points to the same truth: God gives wisdom to those who ask, guides the steps of His people, and asks us to trust Him with what we cannot yet see. The verses are grouped by the kind of moment you might be facing, so you can find the ones that fit your situation today.

Verses for Asking God for Wisdom

Before you weigh options or make a list of pros and cons, it helps to remember that wisdom is something you can request. These verses speak to the posture of the heart when you do not know what to do and need to ask plainly.

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

(WEB)

James speaks to anyone who feels foolish for not knowing the answer. Try saying this verse aloud before you open your calendar or your email, then ask God for the specific wisdom you need for that one decision.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

These verses warn against leaning only on your own sense of what seems right. Write the phrase “lean not on your own understanding” on a note card and keep it in your wallet as a reminder to pause before you commit.

Proverbs 2:6

For the LORD gives wisdom. Out of his mouth comes knowledge and understanding.

(WEB)

This verse says wisdom comes from the Lord, not from our own cleverness. When you feel anxious about getting it right, let it steady you by reminding you that understanding is a gift you receive rather than a test you must pass alone.

Verses for Trusting God’s Guidance

Some decisions do not come with a clear map. These verses speak to the peace of knowing that God sees the road ahead even when you cannot, and that He promises to direct the steps of those who seek Him.

Psalm 32:8

I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you shall go. I will counsel you with my eye on you.

(WEB)

This is God speaking directly about guidance, promising to instruct and teach. Consider reading it slowly during your commute and noticing one small thing you sense God may be nudging you toward.

Psalm 119:105

Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path.

(WEB)

The psalmist describes God’s word as a lamp for the feet, which lights the next step rather than the whole path. When a decision feels overwhelming, ask what the next faithful step is and take only that one.

Isaiah 30:21

And when you turn to the right hand, and when you turn to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way. Walk in it.”

(WEB)

Isaiah describes a voice behind you saying, “This is the way, walk in it.” Set aside a few quiet minutes this week and ask God to make His direction clear, then write down anything that keeps returning to your mind.

Romans 8:28

We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to his purpose.

(WEB)

Paul writes that God works all things together for good for those who love Him. This does not mean every choice will turn out easily, but it does mean you can make a decision with confidence that God is still at work in it.

Verses for Choosing When You Feel Unsure

Doubt and fear can cloud even good decisions. These verses address the anxious heart that wants certainty before acting and invite you to bring your uncertainty honestly before God.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul connects anxiety with prayer and thanksgiving. Before you sign, reply, or accept, take a moment to name your worries to God and thank Him for what He has already provided.

Psalm 37:5

Commit your way to the LORD. Trust also in him, and he will do this…

(WEB)

This verse invites you to commit your way to the Lord and trust Him to act. Write down the decision you are facing, pray over it, and then deliberately hand it over, knowing you are not carrying it alone.

Psalm 25:4-5

4 Show me your ways, the LORD. Teach me your paths. 5 Guide me in your truth, and teach me, For you are the God of my salvation, I wait for you all day long.

(WEB)

The psalmist asks God to teach his paths and lead him in truth. Use this as a prayer before a conversation or meeting where you need clarity, asking God to show you what to say and what to leave unsaid.

1 Corinthians 16:14

Let all that you do be done in love.

(WEB)

Paul ends his letter with a simple instruction: let all you do be done in love. When you are torn between options, ask which choice best reflects love for God and for the people your decision will touch.

Micah 6:8

He has shown you, O man, what is good. What does the LORD require of you, but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?

(WEB)

Micah summarizes what the Lord requires: to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with God. Testing a decision against these three qualities can bring clarity when many options seem equally reasonable.

Verses for Acting in Faith After You Decide

Once you have prayed and considered your options, the next step is to move forward. These verses encourage you to act with courage and to trust God with the outcome.

Joshua 1:9

Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

(WEB)

God tells Joshua to be strong and courageous because the Lord goes with him. When you finally choose, say this verse over yourself before you make the call or sign the form.

Colossians 3:23

And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men…

(WEB)

Paul encourages believers to work at everything as unto the Lord. Whatever you decide, commit to doing it with integrity and care, offering the result to God rather than measuring your worth by it.

Proverbs 16:9

A man’s heart plans his course, but the LORD directs his steps.

(WEB)

This verse recognizes both human planning and divine direction. Make your plan with care, then hold it loosely, remembering that God is the one who establishes your steps.

How to Use These Verses

Choose two or three verses that match the decision in front of you rather than reading the whole list at once. Write them on a card, in a notebook, or as a phone wallpaper so they are visible when the pressure rises. Reading them aloud in the morning, before you open your inbox or head into a difficult conversation, can set the tone for the day.

Pair the verses with honest prayer. Name the options you are considering, the fears you feel, and the outcome you hope for, then ask God for wisdom and peace. Revisit the verses after a few days, noticing whether your thinking has settled or whether new questions have surfaced. Scripture often works slowly, shaping your judgment over time as you keep returning to it.

A Short Prayer for Making Decisions

Lord, I come to You with a choice I do not know how to make. You know every detail of my situation, including the parts I cannot see, and I confess that I often lean on my own understanding. Please give me the wisdom You promise to those who ask, and quiet the voices of fear and pressure that crowd my thinking. Guide my steps, and show me the next faithful thing to do. Whatever I decide, help me to act with integrity and to trust You with the outcome. Thank You for walking with me through this. Amen.
