BIBLEREADER // ISABELLA WALKER

This list gives you Bible scriptures about overcoming obstacles, arranged by the kind of hard moment you may be facing, so you can find the right word for the situation in front of you. It is written for Christians who want to face a setback, a long wait, a fear or an opposition with God’s promises in view rather than only their own resources. Nearly every passage here reminds you that the obstacle is real, but it is not the final word, because the God who calls you is also the God who goes ahead of you.

Verses for the Morning Before a Hard Day

Some obstacles are visible on your calendar: a difficult conversation, a medical appointment, a meeting you have been dreading all week. The verses in this group are meant for the early hours, when the weight of the day is still ahead of you and you need to remember who goes with you into it.

Joshua 1:9

Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

(WEB)

Joshua was about to lead a whole nation across a river and into territory full of enemies. Read this verse before you leave the house, and then name the one task you fear most. Ask God to be present in that specific moment, not only in general terms.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

This verse speaks to fear that has settled into the body as much as the mind. Notice where your fear sits today, perhaps in your chest or your stomach, and breathe slowly while you repeat the verse to yourself. Let the promise of God’s presence reach the place where the fear lives.

Psalm 46:1-2

1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. 2 Therefore we won’t be afraid, though the earth changes, though the mountains are shaken into the heart of the seas…

(WEB)

The psalmist imagines the ground shaking and the mountains falling into the sea, and still declares God a refuge. When a day feels unstable, write these two verses on a card and keep it in your pocket. Touch it when you feel the old urge to brace yourself against everything.

Verses for When the Road Feels Too Long

Some obstacles do not end in a day. They are the slow ones: a illness that lingers, a job search that keeps going, a grief that returns in waves. These passages speak to the endurance that is needed when you have already been pressing forward for a long time and feel tired of it.

Galatians 6:9

Let us not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don’t give up.

(WEB)

Paul writes to believers who are worn out by doing good with no visible reward. If you are in a long season, name one small faithful act you can do this week, such as a phone call, a meal or a prayer, and offer it as ongoing obedience rather than a shortcut to the finish line.

Romans 5:3-5

3 Not only this, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces perseverance; 4 and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope: 5 and hope doesn’t disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

(WEB)

Paul traces a chain from suffering to endurance to character to hope. You do not have to feel grateful for the difficulty to take the next step in the chain. Simply ask God to show you what endurance is building in you, even if you cannot yet see the result.

Hebrews 12:1-2

1 Therefore let us also, seeing we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, lay aside every weight and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, 2 looking to Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising its shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

(WEB)

The writer pictures a race and urges runners to set aside whatever slows them down. Ask yourself honestly what weight you have been carrying, whether a resentment, a habit or an anxious thought, and decide one thing you can set down today. Keep your eyes on Jesus rather than on the length of the course.

Verses for Opposition and Hard People

Obstacles are not only circumstances. Sometimes they are people who resist you, misunderstand you or work against what God has put in your hands. These verses address how to stand firm, how to pray for those who oppose you and how to trust God with the outcome.

Romans 8:31

What then shall we say about these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?

(WEB)

Paul asks a question that expects a confident answer. When someone in your life seems set against you, write the verse down, then list the people and resources God has already placed around you. Let the list remind you that opposition is not the whole picture.

Nehemiah 4:9

But we made our prayer to our God, and set a watch against them day and night, because of them.

(WEB)

Nehemiah faced mockery and threats while rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem, and his response combined prayer with practical watchfulness. If opposition is slowing your work, pray first, then identify one sensible precaution you can take this week, such as asking a trusted friend to review your plans.

Matthew 5:44

But I tell you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who mistreat you and persecute you…

(WEB)

Jesus asks his listeners to pray for the people who oppose them, which is one of the hardest commands in the gospel. You do not have to feel warm toward that person to pray. Choose one specific request for their good, such as peace in their home or wisdom in their work, and pray it once each day for a week.

Verses for the Times You Feel Like Giving Up

Some obstacles work from the inside, eroding your sense that you can keep going at all. The passages in this group speak to weakness, discouragement and the temptation to stop trying. They offer God’s strength not as a feeling you must summon but as a gift you can receive.

2 Corinthians 12:9

He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Most gladly therefore I will rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest on me.

(WEB)

Paul had asked God to remove a painful difficulty, and the answer he received was not removal but sufficiency. When you feel too weak to continue, admit your weakness plainly in prayer, then ask God to supply the grace you need for the next hour rather than for the whole year.

Philippians 4:13

I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.

(WEB)

Paul wrote this from prison, and the strength he describes was not a guarantee of ease. Read the verse in its context of contentment in every circumstance. Then name one ordinary task that feels beyond you right now, and ask God to strengthen you for that task specifically.

Psalm 42:5

Why are you in despair, my soul? Why are you disturbed within me? Hope in God! For I shall still praise him for the saving help of his presence.

(WEB)

The psalmist speaks to his own discouraged soul and asks it a question. Try speaking to yourself the same way: ask why you are cast down, then remind yourself of one thing you have seen God do before. Let your hope be a conversation with yourself rather than a feeling you wait for.

How to Use These Verses

Write the verses that speak most directly to your situation on an index card or in the notes app on your phone, and keep them where you will see them: the bathroom mirror, the dashboard, the lock screen. Repetition helps a verse move from something you read once to something you can recall under pressure, so aim to read the same two or three passages for a full week before you change them.

Pray the verses rather than only reading them. Turn each promise into a request, as in “Lord, you are with me in this meeting, so give me the words I need,” and then pause to listen. You may find that the same verse speaks differently on a Tuesday than it did on a Sunday, which is part of how Scripture keeps working in ordinary life.

A Short Prayer for Overcoming Obstacles

Lord, you see the obstacles in front of me more clearly than I do, and you know which ones I am tempted to carry alone. Give me the courage of Joshua and the endurance of the psalmists, and remind me that your presence goes with me into every hard room. Where I am weak, supply your strength, and where I am afraid, speak your peace into the places that feel most fragile. Teach me to pray for those who oppose me and to trust you with outcomes I cannot control. Thank you for going ahead of me and for standing with me in the waiting. Amen.
