BIBLEREADER // STEVEN MITCHELL

This list gives you Bible verses about restoration, grouped by the moments when you most need them: when you have failed, when you have been hurt, when you feel far from God, and when you are waiting for something to be made whole again. It is written for anyone who wants Scripture that speaks to rebuilding a relationship, a life, or a sense of hope.

Each set of verses points to the same truth: God is in the business of repair. He does not simply tolerate broken things; he moves toward them with patience, promise, and power to make them new.

Verses for When You Have Failed and Need to Come Back

Restoration often begins with honest return. These verses speak to the moment after a mistake, when shame wants to keep you hiding and grace is asking you to turn around.

Psalm 51:10-12

10 Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a right spirit within me. 11 Don’t throw me from your presence, and don’t take your holy Spirit from me. 12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation. Uphold me with a willing spirit.

(WEB)

David wrote this after his sin with Bathsheba was exposed. He asks for a clean heart and a renewed spirit rather than just relief from consequences. Try praying these lines slowly before you open your phone in the morning.

Joel 2:25

I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten, the great locust, the grasshopper, and the caterpillar, my great army, which I sent among you.

(WEB)

Joel speaks of years lost to hardship and promises that God can give back what was taken. Write the name of one season you wish you could recover, and place this verse beside it as a reminder that God counts years differently than we do.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Even in a book of grief, the writer holds onto God’s mercies, which are new each morning. When yesterday’s failure replays in your mind, let this verse be the first thing you think about after you wake.

Verses for When Someone Has Hurt You or Broken Trust

Sometimes the broken thing is a friendship, a marriage, or a family bond damaged by another person. These verses describe the slow work of reconciliation and the hope that what was split apart can be joined again.

Romans 12:18

If it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all men.

(WEB)

Paul acknowledges that peace is not always fully in our control, but he asks us to do what we can. Before you send that difficult message, ask yourself what your part in peace looks like today, and name it honestly.

Matthew 5:23-24

23 “If therefore you are offering your gift at the altar, and there remember that your brother has anything against you, 24 leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.

(WEB)

Jesus tells his listeners to leave their gift at the altar and go to a brother who has something against them. Consider whether there is someone you need to approach first, and let that step come before your other religious duties this week.

Ephesians 4:32

And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you.

(WEB)

Paul connects forgiveness to the kindness God has already shown us. When resentment tightens your chest, remember that restoration is anchored in what you have already received, and let that memory soften your next conversation.

Verses for When You Feel Far from God

Restoration is not only about repairing human relationships. Many people feel distance from God during dry seasons or after long neglect. These verses assure you that the Lord draws near to those who turn back to him.

James 4:8

Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

(WEB)

James gives a simple promise: draw near to God and he will draw near to you. Try taking one small step toward him today, such as opening a Psalm or sitting quietly for two minutes before the noise of the day begins.

Isaiah 1:18

“Come now, and let us reason together,” says the LORD: “Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow. Though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.

(WEB)

God invites his people to reason with him even when their sins are deep. Write down one thing you have been carrying that you have not yet brought to him, and let this invitation be the opening line of your prayer.

Psalm 80:3

Turn us again, God. Cause your face to shine, and we will be saved.

(WEB)

The psalmist repeats a plea for God to restore and cause his face to shine. When you feel unseen, pray this line aloud as a request, trusting that God hears even prayers that are simply a return to him.

Verses for Waiting on Something Better to Come

Some restoration is slow, and you may be waiting for a healed body, a rebuilt career, or a family to come back together. These verses encourage patient trust while God works in ways you cannot yet see.

Isaiah 61:3

To provide for those who mourn in Zion, to give to them a garland for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they may be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he may be glorified.

(WEB)

Isaiah describes God giving beauty for ashes and joy for mourning. If you are in a season of grief, keep this verse where you will see it on the days when the ashes still feel heavy.

Ecclesiastes 3:11

He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in their hearts, yet so that man can’t find out the work that God has done from the beginning even to the end.

(WEB)

The Teacher says God has made everything beautiful in its time. When progress feels stalled, remind yourself that God works on his own timetable, and that the waiting is not wasted.

Philippians 1:6

Being confident of this very thing, that he who began a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.

(WEB)

Paul writes that the God who began a good work will carry it on to completion. Think of one area of your life still in progress and speak this verse over it, asking God to finish what he started.

Revelation 21:5

He who sits on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” He said, “Write, for these words of God are faithful and true.”

(WEB)

The one seated on the throne declares that he is making all things new. End your reading with this verse on the days you feel most weary, letting it lift your eyes toward the full restoration God has promised.

How to Use These Verses

Choose one verse from the section that fits your current season and write it on an index card or a note on your phone. Keep it where you will see it during a moment of stress, such as at the kitchen sink or in the car before you walk into work. Repetition matters more than volume, so returning to the same verse for a week will often do more than reading ten at once.

Pair your reading with prayer. Read the verse aloud, pause on the phrase that stands out, and then speak to God about it in your own words. If the verse is hard to receive, ask him to help you believe it, and be honest with him about where your faith feels thin.

A Short Prayer for Restoration

Lord, you are the God who makes broken things whole, and I come to you today aware of what needs mending in my life. Show me where I have strayed and give me the courage to return. Where others have hurt me, help me to seek peace in the ways you would have me pursue it, and give me a heart that remembers the mercy I have received. Where I am waiting, teach me to trust your timing and to believe that you are still working. Make me new in the ways only you can, and let your restoring grace reach every corner of my life. Amen.
