BIBLEREADER // STEVEN MITCHELL

This page gives you Bible verses about second chances, arranged by the moments when you most need them: a morning after a failure, a long wait for forgiveness, a fresh start you are not sure you deserve. It is written for anyone who has messed up, been let down, or simply feels that the story is not finished yet. Across these passages, God is shown as one who restores, renews and makes room for people to begin again.

Verses for the Morning After You Have Failed

Some mornings the mistake is still sitting on your chest before your feet touch the floor. These verses speak to that heaviness and point out that God’s mercy starts again each day, not only once.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Read these slowly at the kitchen table before the day begins. Then name one small task you can do well today, so that your effort has somewhere to land instead of circling back to yesterday’s error.

Psalm 103:12

As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.

(WEB)

This verse uses the distance between east and west to describe how far God removes our sins. When the old failure comes back to mind, try saying the verse out loud and then go about your next task rather than rehearsing the guilt again.

Isaiah 43:18-19

18 “Don’t remember the former things, and don’t consider the things of old. 19 Behold, I will do a new thing. It springs out now. Don’t you know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.

(WEB)

God invites attention to what he is doing now rather than what is already past. Write one thing you hope to do differently this week and keep the note where you will see it, as a quiet sign that the road ahead is open.

Verses for Waiting on Restoration

Second chances rarely arrive all at once. Trust, relationships and inner peace often rebuild slowly, and these verses encourage patience while the work is underway.

Joel 2:25

I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten, the great locust, the grasshopper, and the caterpillar, my great army, which I sent among you.

(WEB)

Joel speaks of years the locusts have eaten, a picture of loss that God promises to repay. If you are in a season of slow repair, mark the days you can see progress, even small ones, and thank God for each one.

Romans 8:1

There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who don’t walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.

(WEB)

Paul states that those who belong to Christ face no condemnation. When you catch yourself living as though the verdict is still pending, read this verse aloud and decide to act as someone already forgiven.

Micah 7:18-19

18 Who is a God like you, who pardons iniquity, and passes over the disobedience of the remnant of his heritage? He doesn’t retain his anger forever, because he delights in loving kindness. 19 He will again have compassion on us. He will tread our iniquities under foot; and you will cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.

(WEB)

Micah describes a God who delights in mercy and casts sins into the depths of the sea. Consider writing a short note to someone you have wronged, trusting that God’s forgiveness frees you to take that honest step.

Hosea 14:4

“I will heal their waywardness. I will love them freely; for my anger is turned away from him.

(WEB)

In this verse God promises to heal backsliding and love freely. Pick one habit you have been trying to return to and make a plan for the first step, letting the promise of healing shape the plan rather than your fear of failing again.

Verses for Starting Something New

A second chance often means a new job, a new relationship with God, or a new way of living. These passages connect fresh beginnings with God’s creative work and his calling.

2 Corinthians 5:17

Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old things have passed away. Behold, all things have become new.

(WEB)

Paul says that anyone in Christ is a new creation, and the old has passed away. Before you start the new thing, pray for a clear picture of who God is making you to be, and let that picture guide small choices this week.

Lamentations 3:25

The LORD is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him.

(WEB)

This verse says that the Lord is good to those who wait for him and seek him. When you feel impatient with your progress, set aside ten minutes to sit quietly and seek God first, before reviewing your list of goals.

Philippians 3:13-14

13 Brothers, I don’t regard myself as yet having taken hold, but one thing I do. Forgetting the things which are behind, and stretching forward to the things which are before, 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul writes of forgetting what lies behind and pressing on toward the goal. Choose one concrete step toward the future you want and take it this week, even if it feels too modest to matter.

John 21:15-17

15 So when they had eaten their breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I have affection for you.” He said to him, “Feed my lambs.” 16 He said to him again a second time, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I have affection for you.” He said to him, “Tend my sheep.” 17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you have affection for me?” Peter was grieved because he asked him the third time, “Do you have affection for me?” He said to him, “Lord, you know everything. You know that I have affection for you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep.

(WEB)

Jesus restores Peter after his denial by the shore, asking him three times whether he loves him and then giving him a task. If you are rebuilding trust with someone, consider a practical act of service as your own way of answering that call.

Ezekiel 36:26

I will also give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit within you. I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you a heart of flesh.

(WEB)

God promises a new heart and a new spirit. Ask him each morning this week to soften whatever has grown hard in you, and notice where your responses begin to change.

Verses for Trusting God With Your Future

Even after forgiveness, the fear of repeating the same mistakes can linger. These verses root your hope in God’s faithfulness rather than in your own track record.

Psalm 51:10

Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a right spirit within me.

(WEB)

David asks God to create a clean heart and renew a steadfast spirit. Make this prayer your own on days when you feel least able to change, and let it remind you that the work is God’s as well as yours.

Philippians 1:6

Being confident of this very thing, that he who began a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.

(WEB)

Paul expresses confidence that the God who began a good work will complete it. When you doubt your progress, remind yourself of this promise and review one way you have already seen growth.

Ecclesiastes 7:8

Better is the end of a thing than its beginning. The patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.

(WEB)

This verse says the end of a matter is better than its beginning. Use it to reflect on patience: a story that began badly may still end well, so give your present choices room to unfold.

Jeremiah 29:11

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you,” says the LORD, “thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future.

(WEB)

God speaks to a people in exile, promising plans for their welfare and a future with hope. Write this verse on a card and place it where you pray, reading it whenever worry about tomorrow starts to crowd out today.

How to Use These Verses

Write the verses that speak most to you on index cards or in a notebook, and place them somewhere you will see them daily, such as the bathroom mirror, the car dashboard or beside your coffee. Repetition helps the words move from something you read to something you remember when pressure rises.

Read a few of them at the start or end of the day, and pray them back to God in your own words. You may find that certain verses fit certain seasons, so return to them as your circumstances change and let the list grow as God gives you new passages to lean on.

A Short Prayer for Second Chances

Father, you know the mistakes I have made and the places where I have fallen short. Thank you that your mercy is new each morning and that you do not hold my past over me. Help me to receive your forgiveness fully, and give me courage to take the next honest step toward the people and work you have placed in front of me.

Renew what is worn down in me, and be patient with the slow parts of my healing. Let me trust that the story is not finished and that you are still writing it with grace. Amen.
