This page gives you Bible scriptures about serving others, grouped by the moments when service is most likely to feel costly, unnoticed, or hard to start. It is written for anyone who wants to serve their family, church, workplace, or neighbors with a heart shaped by Jesus rather than by pressure or applause. Across both testaments, these passages share one pattern: God’s people are called to lower themselves in love, following the example of Christ who came to give his life for others.

Verses for Choosing to Serve When No One Is Watching

Much of serving happens in small, unseen tasks: washing dishes, answering a late phone call, or quietly covering someone else’s shift. The verses in this group speak to the motive behind those acts and remind you that the Father sees what is done in secret.

Galatians 5:13

For you, brothers, were called for freedom. Only don’t use your freedom for gain to the flesh, but through love be servants to one another.

(WEB)

Paul tells the believers in Galatia that their freedom is meant to become service to one another. Before your next routine task, pause and ask yourself whether you are doing it to serve someone or simply to get it off your list.

Matthew 6:3-4

3 But when you do merciful deeds, don’t let your left hand know what your right hand does, 4 so that your merciful deeds may be in secret, then your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.

(WEB)

Jesus teaches that giving and helping should be done so quietly that even your own left hand does not know what your right hand is doing. Choose one small act this week, such as taking out a neighbor’s trash bin, and do it without mentioning it to anyone.

Colossians 3:23-24

23 And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men, 24 knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ.

(WEB)

Paul encourages workers to serve wholeheartedly, as if they were serving the Lord himself. When a job feels thankless, you can change your focus by naming the person you are serving and offering the work to God before you begin.

Verses for Serving People Who Are Hard to Love

Some of the hardest service is directed toward people who irritate us, disappoint us, or have hurt us. These passages show that love in action is not based on how someone treats us in return.

Romans 12:10

In love of the brothers be tenderly affectionate to one another; in honor preferring one another…

(WEB)

Paul asks believers to be devoted to one another in love and to honor others above themselves. Think of one person who is difficult for you, and decide on a specific way to show them honor this week, such as speaking well of them to someone else.

Luke 6:27-28

27 “But I tell you who hear: love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, and pray for those who mistreat you.

(WEB)

Jesus calls his followers to do good to those who hate them and to pray for those who mistreat them. Before you respond to a hurtful comment, take a moment to pray for that person, asking God to bless them in a way you would not naturally choose.

Philippians 2:3-4

3 Doing nothing through rivalry or through conceit, but in humility, each counting others better than himself; 4 each of you not just looking to his own things, but each of you also to the things of others.

(WEB)

Paul urges believers not to act out of selfish ambition but to regard others as more important than themselves. When you feel tempted to defend your own interests, ask what the other person needs most and whether you can meet that need first.

Verses That Point to Jesus as the Model of Service

The Christian call to serve is grounded in the life of Jesus, who gave himself fully for others. These verses help you see service as a reflection of who he is rather than a burden you carry alone.

Mark 10:45

For the Son of Man also came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

(WEB)

Jesus explains that the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many. When you feel your own needs being overlooked, remember that Jesus chose the way of service first, and let his example steady your steps.

John 13:14-15

14 If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15 For I have given you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you.

(WEB)

After washing his disciples’ feet, Jesus tells them to do as he has done for them. Consider an ordinary household task you could take on for someone in your home this week, treating it as a quiet way of following Jesus.

Philippians 2:5-7

5 Have this in your mind, which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, existing in the form of God, didn’t consider equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in the likeness of men.

(WEB)

Paul describes Christ taking the form of a servant, setting aside status to live among people. Ask God to shape your attitude so that you think about service the way Jesus did, willing to give up comfort or recognition for another person’s good.

Verses for Serving Out of Strength Given by God

Service can drain you, and it is easy to start believing that everything depends on you. These passages point you back to the God who supplies the strength, gifts, and grace needed to keep serving.

1 Peter 4:10

As each has received a gift, employ it in serving one another, as good managers of the grace of God in its various forms.

(WEB)

Peter reminds believers that each person has received a gift and should use it to serve others as good stewards of God’s grace. List one gift you have noticed in yourself, such as encouragement or hospitality, and look for one opportunity to use it this week.

Ephesians 4:12

For the perfecting of the saints, to the work of serving, to the building up of the body of Christ…

(WEB)

Paul explains that gifted leaders equip God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ is built up. If you feel you have little to offer, remember that your part matters within a larger body, and ask a fellow believer how you might help them.

Isaiah 40:29-31

29 He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might. 30 Even the youths faint and get weary, and the young men utterly fall; 31 But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

Isaiah says that God gives strength to the weary and renews the strength of those who wait on him. When you feel spent from caring for others, pause and ask God to renew you, then return to your work with a dependence that is honest rather than frantic.

How to Use These Verses

Write two or three of these verses on an index card and place it where you will see it during the day, such as near the coffee maker or on your work desk. Reading one verse each morning before the day’s first responsibility can help you approach service with intention instead of reacting to whatever comes next.

When you pray these passages, read the verse slowly, then name a specific person or task where it applies. Ask God to show you where to serve in the coming week, and be ready to notice the small openings he provides, whether a dinner to bring, a call to make, or a burden to share.

A Short Prayer for Serving Others

Father, thank you for showing me the way of service through Jesus, who gave himself for others. I confess that I often want to be noticed, thanked, or repaid for what I do. Shape my heart so that I serve with humility and love, even when no one sees. Give me strength when I am weary, and show me specific people I can help today. Let my hands do good work in your name, and let my life point others toward your kindness. Amen.
