BIBLEREADER // STEVEN MITCHELL

This list gives you Bible scriptures about teaching, arranged by the situations where teaching actually happens: preparing a lesson, standing in front of a class, correcting someone gently, and continuing to learn yourself. It is written for parents, Sunday school volunteers, small group leaders, mentors, and anyone who has been asked to explain their faith to someone else. Most of these passages share one conviction: teaching is a responsibility carried out in dependence on God, and it is shaped as much by character and patience as by content.

Verses for Preparing to Teach

Before a lesson is ever spoken, it has to be studied and lived. The verses in this group point to the quiet work that comes first, the reading, the praying, and the honest examination of your own heart that makes teaching credible.

Ezra 7:10

For Ezra had set his heart to seek the LORD’s law, and to do it, and to teach statutes and ordinances in Israel.

(WEB)

Ezra is remembered as a teacher because he first committed himself to studying the law and practicing it. Try writing one sentence about what you want to see change in your own life this week before you write a single point for anyone else.

2 Timothy 2:15

Give diligence to present yourself approved by God, a workman who doesn’t need to be ashamed, properly handling the Word of Truth.

(WEB)

Paul asks Timothy to work hard at handling the word accurately, which means careful reading, not vague impressions. Set aside a fixed block of time for study before each lesson, even if it is only thirty minutes on a Tuesday night.

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

(WEB)

When you feel unprepared, James reminds you that wisdom is available for the asking. Pray over your lesson notes out loud before you open them, asking God to show you what your listeners most need to hear.

Proverbs 16:3

Commit your deeds to the LORD, and your plans shall succeed.

(WEB)

Committing your plans to the Lord means letting Him shape the lesson, not just the outline. Before you finalize your plan, read through it once more and ask whether it serves the people in front of you or only your own sense of being impressive.

Verses for Speaking and Teaching Others

Once you stand before others, the goal is clarity, humility, and love. These passages address the speaking itself, reminding you that the message is God’s and that how you say it matters as much as what you say.

Colossians 4:6

Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.

(WEB)

Paul asks that your speech be gracious and well seasoned, suited to the person in front of you. When you answer a hard question, slow down, listen to what is really being asked, and respond to that person rather than to a generic version of them.

Ephesians 4:15

But speaking truth in love, we may grow up in all things into him, who is the head, Christ…

(WEB)

Speaking the truth in love keeps teaching from becoming either cold correction or sentimental agreement. Before you correct someone, name one thing you genuinely respect about them so that your truth arrives with care.

Matthew 28:19-20

19 Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I commanded you. Behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

(WEB)

Jesus sends His followers to make disciples by teaching them to obey what He commanded, which is a lifelong process, not a single lecture. Think of your teaching as one step in an ongoing relationship, and plan a follow-up conversation after each lesson.

Psalm 78:4

We will not hide them from their children, telling to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, his strength, and his wondrous deeds that he has done.

(WEB)

The psalmist speaks of passing God’s works on to the next generation, so that they are not hidden from their children. Choose one story from your own experience of God’s faithfulness to share this week, since personal testimony often teaches more than doctrine alone.

Verses for Patience and Correction

Teaching includes moments when people struggle, misunderstand, or resist. These verses speak to the patience required, and to the humility needed when you are the one who has been corrected.

2 Timothy 2:24-25

24 The Lord’s servant must not quarrel, but be gentle towards all, able to teach, patient, 25 in gentleness correcting those who oppose him: perhaps God may give them repentance leading to a full knowledge of the truth…

(WEB)

Paul describes the servant of the Lord as kind and patient, gently correcting those who oppose the truth. When a student pushes back, pause, lower your voice, and ask a question that invites them to think rather than defend.

Galatians 6:1

Brothers, even if a man is caught in some fault, you who are spiritual must restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; looking to yourself so that you also aren’t tempted.

(WEB)

Restoring someone who has fallen calls for gentleness and a clear awareness of your own weakness. Before you address someone’s mistake, check your own motives and ask God to keep you from any hint of superiority.

James 3:1

Let not many of you be teachers, my brothers, knowing that we will receive heavier judgment.

(WEB)

James warns that those who teach will be judged more strictly, which should make you careful and sober about the role. Keep a short list of what you have said publicly and review it weekly, asking whether each statement was accurate and kind.

Proverbs 9:9

Instruct a wise man, and he will be still wiser. Teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning.

(WEB)

The wise person welcomes instruction and grows from it, while the scoffer resents correction. When someone offers you a fair correction, thank them and write down what they said, then decide on one concrete change to make.

Verses for the Ongoing Life of a Teacher

Teaching is not only something you give away; it is also something you keep receiving. These passages remind you that God teaches His teachers, and that rest, humility, and perseverance belong to the work.

John 14:26

But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things, and will remind you of all that I said to you.

(WEB)

Jesus promises that the Holy Spirit will teach and remind His followers of all He has said. Before you walk into a room, ask the Spirit to bring to mind what you need and to guard you from forgetting what matters most.

Isaiah 50:4

The Lord the LORD has given me the tongue of those who are taught, that I may know how to sustain with words him who is weary. He wakens morning by morning, he wakens my ear to hear as those who are taught.

(WEB)

The servant described here is given a well-taught tongue and morning by morning listens as one being taught. Begin each day by listening to Scripture before you speak to anyone else, letting God set the tone for what you will say.

Psalm 32:8

I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you shall go. I will counsel you with my eye on you.

(WEB)

God promises to instruct and guide, watching over His people with a steady eye. When a lesson feels like it has fallen flat, remember that you are not the only source of guidance and ask God for direction for the next step.

Galatians 6:9

Let us not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don’t give up.

(WEB)

Paul encourages believers not to grow weary in doing good, since a harvest comes in its season. If a class seems to be making no progress, keep a simple record of small changes you notice, since growth in learners is often slow and hard to see.

How to Use These Verses

Write the verses that matter most to your teaching on an index card and keep it in your lesson binder or phone. Read the card before you prepare, and again just before you teach, so that the verse shapes your posture rather than sitting on a page you never open.

Pray the verses back to God rather than only reading them. Choose one each week, turn it into a request for yourself or for a specific learner, and bring that request up again at the end of the week to notice how God has answered.

A Short Prayer for Teaching

Lord, you are the true teacher, and I come to you before I stand in front of anyone else. Give me a diligent heart to study your word and an honest heart to examine my own life before I try to explain it to others. Fill my speech with grace and seasoning, and help me speak the truth in love without harshness or pride. When someone struggles or resists, give me patience, and when I am corrected, give me the humility to receive it well. Let your Spirit bring to mind what is needed in each moment, and let whatever I teach point people to you rather than to myself. Amen.
