BIBLEREADER // ELIZABETH KIM

Colossians 1:27 tells believers that the rich, glorious secret God kept hidden for ages is now known: Christ himself lives in people who trust him, and that presence is the guarantee of a glorious future with God. Paul wrote this letter to the Christian church in Colossae, a city in the Roman province of Asia (modern western Turkey). He was addressing a mostly Gentile congregation, non-Jewish believers who had come to faith through the gospel.

To whom God was pleased to make known what are the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory…

What Colossians 1:27 Means

The verse begins by saying that God chose to make something known. The word “mystery” in the Bible does not mean a puzzle. It means a truth that was hidden in earlier generations and is now disclosed. Paul is saying the plan of God, that Gentiles would share fully in God’s promises, was not clear to people in the past but has been revealed in Christ. The “riches of the glory” points to the immense worth and splendor of that plan.

The heart of the verse is the phrase about Christ “in you.” Paul is describing a real, ongoing relationship: the risen Lord dwells within believers through the Holy Spirit. The last phrase, “the hope of glory,” means that this indwelling Christ is the pledge of the final sharing in God’s glory that all believers will receive. The verse does not promise that life will be easy or that every prayer will be answered as we expect. It promises that Christ is present now and that he secures our future.

The Context of Colossians 1:27

Colossians was written by Paul, traditionally identified as the author, while he was in prison, probably in Rome around the early 60s AD. The letter was written to correct teaching that was pulling believers toward human philosophies, ritual rules, and spiritual claims that minimized Christ. Paul’s answer is that Christ is supreme over all things, and that in him believers have everything they need.

The verses just before this one, 1:24 to 1:26, show Paul suffering for the church and serving as a steward of God’s word. Verse 27 identifies the content of that message. The verses that follow, in 1:28, describe Paul proclaiming and teaching Christ so that every believer may be presented mature in him. Read in this setting, verse 27 is the center of Paul’s gospel: the hidden plan is Christ among the nations, and that plan is about present life and future hope together.

Key Phrases in Colossians 1:27

Galatians 2:20

I have been crucified with Christ, and it is no longer I that live, but Christ lives in me. That life which I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself up for me.

This verse expresses the same union with Christ, describing a life in which Christ lives through faith in the Son of God. It deepens Colossians 1:27 by showing how the indwelling Christ shapes a believer’s daily life and identity.

Romans 8:17

And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint heirs with Christ; if indeed we suffer with him, that we may also be glorified with him.

Paul connects believers’ shared life with Christ to their future inheritance and glory. Like Colossians 1:27, it ties present fellowship with Christ to the hope of sharing in God’s glory.

A Short Prayer From Colossians 1:27

Lord, you have made known the riches of the glory of your plan, and you have shown that your gift is for every people and every person. Thank you that you are not far away from me. Your Son dwells in those who trust him, and I ask you to make that reality steady in my heart today. When I feel uncertain or weary, remind me that you are with me now and that you hold my future in your hands. Shape my thoughts, my choices, and my hopes around the confidence that you are present and faithful. Amen.
