BIBLEREADER // ELIZABETH KIM

Colossians 1:5 says that the faith and love of the Colossian believers come from a hope that God has already set aside for them in heaven, a hope they first heard about when the message of the gospel reached them. In other words, Paul is pointing to a future reward that is reserved for believers and is grounded in the truth of the good news. The verse is written by the apostle Paul, who is writing to the church in Colossae, a city in the region of Phrygia in what is now western Turkey.

Because of the hope which is laid up for you in the heavens, of which you heard before in the word of the truth of the Good News…

What Colossians 1:5 Means

The phrase “because of the hope” tells us the reason behind what Paul has just mentioned in verse 4. The Colossians’ faith in Christ and their love for other believers are not random virtues. They flow from a confident expectation about what God has prepared for them. Paul calls this hope something “laid up,” a word that suggests something stored safely in a treasury, kept until the right time to be given out.

The verse says this hope is kept “in the heavens,” which reminds the reader that the blessing is secured with God himself, not dependent on circumstances in Colossae. Then Paul points back to how they first came to know it: they “heard before in the word of the truth of the Good News.” The gospel is described as truth, meaning it is reliable and can be trusted. The verse does not promise a particular earthly outcome, but it does assure believers that their future is held safely by God.

The Context of Colossians 1:5

Colossians is a letter from Paul, traditionally held to have been written from prison, and it was sent to a church he had not personally founded. Epaphras, a co-worker of Paul, appears to have been the one who first preached the gospel in Colossae and brought the church into being. Paul writes to encourage the believers and to protect them from teachings that would pull them away from Christ.

Just before verse 5, Paul gives thanks for the Colossians’ faith and love, and in verse 6 he describes how the gospel is bearing fruit and growing throughout the world and among them. Verse 5 sits in the middle of this thanksgiving, explaining that their present faith and love rest on a future hope. Reading it this way shows that the hope is not a distant idea but the foundation that supports daily faithfulness.

Key Phrases in Colossians 1:5

1 Peter 1:3-4

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to his great mercy caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an incorruptible and undefiled inheritance that doesn’t fade away, reserved in Heaven for you…

(WEB)

Peter describes a living hope and an inheritance kept in heaven, using language very close to Paul’s picture of a stored-up hope. Reading the two passages together shows that this expectation was a shared foundation of early Christian faith.

Romans 8:24-25

24 For we were saved in hope, but hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for that which he sees? 25 But if we hope for that which we don’t see, we wait for it with patience.

(WEB)

Paul explains in Romans that hope is something we wait for patiently because it is not yet seen. This connects well with Colossians 1:5 by showing how the unseen hope shapes the way believers live with patience in the present.

A Short Prayer From Colossians 1:5

Father, thank you for the hope you have stored up for me in heaven. When my faith feels weak and my love feels thin, remind me that what I am waiting for is safe in your hands. Help me to hear the good news again as if it were new, and let its truth steady my heart. Keep my eyes fixed on what you have prepared, so that my daily faith and love may grow from that hope. Amen.
