BIBLEREADER // STEVEN MITCHELL

This page offers a written prayer for leaders and members of a Bible study group to pray before or during each gathering, and at other times through the week. Pray it aloud together at the start of your study, or read it quietly on your own as you prepare to lead or to attend. You can read it exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words in the same spirit.

Daily Prayers for Bible Study Groups

Lord, thank you for gathering us around your Word. Some of us have come straight from work with tired minds, and some of us have been carrying worries about family, health, or money all week. Quiet us now. Help us set those things down for a while so we can hear what you want to say to us. Open our eyes to the passage in front of us, and open our hearts to one another.

Give whoever is leading tonight a clear mind and a humble spirit. Keep them from needing to have every answer, and help them trust that you can speak through a question as easily as through a sermon. Protect the group from showing off or from staying silent out of fear. Let the quiet ones speak when they are ready, and let the talkative ones make room. Where someone feels unsure of their faith, give them a safe place to say so without shame.

Bind us together in love that is patient and honest. Guard our conversations from gossip, and let our prayer requests be carried with real care. Remind us that we are not here to impress each other but to grow closer to you and to each other. Send us home changed in some small way, and help us remember tonight when the week becomes hard again. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, we are here to listen to you. Settle our thoughts and make us attentive. Give our leader wisdom and our group patience with one another. Let what we read become something we live out before the week is over. Help us speak honestly and listen generously. Thank you that you hear us even when we are unsure how to pray. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 119:105

Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path.

(WEB)

Pray this verse at the start of your study, asking God to let the Scripture be a clear guide for the words you are about to read together. It reminds the group that the light comes from God’s Word, not from our own cleverness.

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

(WEB)

Use this verse when the leader or a member feels stuck on a hard question. Ask God openly for wisdom, trusting that he gives generously and does not scold those who ask.

Colossians 3:16

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; in all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your heart to the Lord.

(WEB)

Pray this for the way the group speaks and sings to one another. Ask that the word of Christ would dwell richly among you, shaping how you teach, encourage, and listen.

Hebrews 10:24-25

24 Let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good works, 25 not forsaking our own assembling together, as the custom of some is, but exhorting one another; and so much the more, as you see the Day approaching.

(WEB)

Pray this for the people who come each week and for those who have stopped coming. Ask God to help the group stir one another toward love and good works, and to make your meeting a place people want to return to.

Proverbs 27:17

Iron sharpens iron; so a man sharpens his friend’s countenance.

(WEB)

Pray this when you feel dull or discouraged in your faith. Ask God to sharpen you through the honest friction of good conversation and to make the group a place where iron meets iron for your growth.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many groups find it helpful to pray this prayer at the very beginning of the evening, before anyone opens a Bible or pours a cup of coffee. Ask someone to read it slowly while everyone else sits with their eyes closed or their hands open on their lap. If you are alone, try praying it during your commute or in the few minutes before you sit down to prepare next week’s lesson, with your Bible and a pen beside you.

Consider keeping a small notebook for the group’s prayer requests so that the words here can be personalized each week. Anyone who will be leading, teaching, or hosting can pray the prayer for the whole group, as a leader would for the flock. A spouse, a friend, or a church elder could also pray it over a Bible study group that you belong to, so that the words are carried by someone outside the room.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who speaks through his Word make his face shine on this group and give each person peace in their heart. May he strengthen the leader for the work ahead and bless every person who comes with an open Bible and an honest question. May the truth you study together take root in your daily life and grow into faithful love.
