BIBLEREADER // STEVEN MITCHELL

This page offers a daily prayer for doctors, written for physicians, surgeons, residents and other medical professionals who carry the weight of diagnosis, treatment and decisions that affect real lives. Pray it at the start of a shift, on the drive in, or in the quiet minutes before a difficult day begins. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Daily Prayers for Doctors

Lord, you know the long hours and the early mornings that come with this work. You know the patients waiting in the exam room and the charts stacked on the desk. Give me steady hands, clear thinking and a calm mind as I step into this day. Help me listen well to every person who sits in front of me, so that I hear the symptom they struggle to name and the fear they do not say out loud.

Father, when I am tired, remind me that my strength is not my own. Guard me from pride when I am right and from despair when I am wrong. Give me humility to ask for help, wisdom to know when to refer, and courage to deliver hard news with compassion. Let my decisions be guided by care for the person and not only by the numbers on the screen. Protect my family while I am away, and let me come home with something left to give them. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am heading into a demanding day. Steady my hands and quiet my mind. Help me see each patient as someone you love, and give me wisdom for every decision. Let me treat them with honesty and gentleness, and let me depend on you rather than on my own tired strength. Thank you that you are with me in every room I enter. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Pray this when a diagnosis is unclear or a choice feels impossible. It reminds you to bring your medical reasoning before God and to ask him to direct the steps you take.

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

(WEB)

Ask for this wisdom before a difficult consultation or a surgery. Medicine asks for judgment that no textbook fully supplies, and this verse invites you to ask God for it directly.

Psalm 121:1-2

1 I will lift up my eyes to the hills. Where does my help come from? 2 My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth.

(WEB)

Read this on the way into the hospital, especially on nights when the workload feels overwhelming. It turns your eyes from the pressure of the ward toward the one who helps you.

Galatians 6:9

Let us not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don’t give up.

(WEB)

Pray this for endurance on the weeks when progress is slow and patients keep returning. It asks God to keep you faithful in the small, repeated acts of care that make up medical work.

Isaiah 40:29

He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might.

(WEB)

Use this verse when you are running on empty after a long shift. It names God as the source of strength for the weary, which is exactly what a worn-out doctor needs to remember.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many doctors find it helpful to pray this prayer in the car before going inside, or in the staff locker room with a cup of coffee in hand. Keep a printed copy in your bag or as a note on your phone so it is ready on hard mornings. If you have a few seconds between patients, the shorter version works well while you wash your hands.

You can also pray it with a colleague, a chaplain or a small group from your church who understand clinical life. Ask them to pray for you in return, especially for the patients you worry about most. Sharing the prayer with others turns a private habit into a steady support for the whole team.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you into every room today and steady your hands with his peace. May he give you wisdom for the choices no one else can make, and gentleness for the people who are frightened. May he bring you home tonight rested in body and mind, held by a love that does not run out.
