Daniel 2:20 means that God is worthy of endless praise because wisdom and power belong to him alone. Daniel speaks these words after God has revealed a secret that no one in Babylon could uncover, and he gives the credit entirely to God rather than to himself. The verse is spoken by Daniel, a young Jewish exile serving in the court of King Nebuchadnezzar, and it is addressed to God in a moment of thanksgiving.

Daniel answered, “Blessed be the name of God forever and ever; for wisdom and might are his.

What Daniel 2:20 Means

Daniel begins by blessing “the name of God,” which in Hebrew thought means God’s character and reputation as he has revealed himself. To bless his name is to speak well of him, to honor him, and to acknowledge who he is. The word “forever and ever” stretches that praise beyond the present crisis into all time, showing that Daniel’s gratitude is not a passing feeling tied to one answered prayer.

The reason given is simple: “wisdom and might are his.” Wisdom is the ability to understand what is hidden and act rightly, and might is the power to carry it out. Daniel is saying that neither belongs to the king’s astrologers, to Daniel himself, or to any human ruler. The verse does not promise that every situation will turn out the way we hope, but it does teach that the God who holds all wisdom and power can be trusted with the outcome.

The Context of Daniel 2:20

The book of Daniel was written to Jewish people living under foreign powers, and its stories show faithful servants of God surviving in pagan courts. Traditionally the book is attributed to Daniel himself, though many scholars date its final form later, and either way its message is aimed at people who needed to know that the God of Israel still rules over empires. In chapter 2, Nebuchadnezzar demands that his wise men both recall and interpret a dream he has forgotten, and when they fail, the whole group faces execution.

Just before verse 20, Daniel and his friends pray together for mercy, and the secret is revealed to Daniel in a night vision. Verses 21 through 23 then describe God changing times, removing kings, and revealing deep things, which shows that Daniel’s blessing is rooted in what God has just done. Read this way, verse 20 is the first line of a prayer of thanks that flows out of answered prayer, not a general statement about God detached from the story.

Key Phrases in Daniel 2:20

Proverbs 2:6

For the LORD gives wisdom. Out of his mouth comes knowledge and understanding.

(WEB)

This verse says that the Lord gives wisdom and that knowledge and understanding come from his mouth. It echoes Daniel’s confession that wisdom belongs to God, and it reminds readers that seeking wisdom is itself a way of seeking God.

Psalm 62:11

God has spoken once; twice I have heard this, that power belongs to God.

(WEB)

This psalm declares that power belongs to God, which pairs naturally with Daniel’s words about might. Together the two passages teach that the strength we most need is held by the Lord, not by the rulers or resources of this world.

A Short Prayer From Daniel 2:20

Lord, you are the God who knows what is hidden and holds all wisdom and power in your hands. I confess that I often trust my own understanding and my own strength before I trust you. Help me to bless your name today, not only when my prayers are answered but in the middle of uncertainty and waiting. Give me wisdom for the decisions in front of me, and give me the peace that comes from knowing that you reign forever and ever. Amen.
