Daniel 2:28 says that the God of heaven is the one who reveals hidden things, and that he has already shown King Nebuchadnezzar what will happen in the future. Daniel makes this claim in the middle of a crisis, when the king demands that his wise men tell him both a dream he has forgotten and what it means. Daniel speaks to the king directly, giving credit for the answer to God rather than to his own cleverness.
But there is a God in heaven who reveals secrets, and he has made known to the king Nebuchadnezzar what will be in the latter days. Your dream, and the visions of your head on your bed, are these…

What Daniel 2:28 Means
The verse begins with a contrast: the king’s advisors cannot do what he asked, but “there is a God in heaven” who can. The word “secrets” refers to things hidden from ordinary human knowledge, such as the content of a dream or events that have not yet happened. Daniel is saying that the source of real insight is not human learning or magic but the living God.
The phrase “what will be in the latter days” points to the future, and in this context it means the long course of history that God has planned. Daniel does not say here that every detail of your life is laid out in advance. He is talking about God’s knowledge of coming kingdoms and the larger purposes unfolding across time.
The verse also does not promise that God will tell you the future on demand, or that you can read the future in dreams or signs. It affirms who God is and what he knows, and it locates the true answer to human questions in him alone.
The Context of Daniel 2:28
The Book of Daniel is traditionally attributed to Daniel, a young Jewish exile taken to Babylon, and it was written for a community living under foreign rule. Its stories of faithful servants in royal courts would have encouraged readers who felt far from home and far from political power. Chapter 2 opens with Nebuchadnezzar’s troubling dream and his anger at advisors who cannot explain it.
Just before verse 28, Arioch brings Daniel to the king, and the king asks him directly whether he can reveal the dream. Verse 27 is Daniel’s first answer, rejecting the failed methods of the wise men. Verse 28 is the turning point, where he points to God. Verses 29 and 30 then explain that Daniel’s own insight comes only from God, so that the king may understand his own thoughts. Read this way, the verse is the hinge on which the whole chapter turns.

A Short Prayer From Daniel 2:28
Lord, you are the God in heaven who knows what is hidden and what is still to come. When I feel anxious about the future or tempted to trust quick answers, remind me that wisdom comes from you alone. Help me to bring my questions to you honestly and to rest in your knowledge rather than my own. Thank you that nothing about tomorrow is hidden from your sight, and that you hold my days in your hands. Amen.
