BIBLEREADER // ELIZABETH GARCIA

Deuteronomy 6:17 tells the people of Israel to keep God’s commandments carefully, along with his testimonies and statutes, because these are what God has given them to live by. Moses speaks these words to the Israelites on the edge of the promised land, as they prepare to enter and settle there.

You shall diligently keep the commandments of the LORD your God, and his testimonies, and his statutes, which he has commanded you.

What Deuteronomy 6:17 Means

The word “diligently” is the heart of the verse. It does not mean obeying now and then or only when it is convenient. It describes steady, careful attention, the kind a person gives to something they truly value and do not want to get wrong. Moses is asking for consistency, not perfection, and for a settled habit of listening to God rather than a rule followed grudgingly.

The verse names three kinds of guidance: “commandments,” “testimonies,” and “statutes.” Commandments are the clear directives of God’s law. Testimonies point to the covenant and the reminders of what God has done and what he requires. Statutes are the lasting decrees that shape daily life. Together they cover the whole of a life lived under God’s rule, from the great moral principles to the ordinary practices that express them.

What the verse does not promise is that keeping these commands earns God’s favor or guarantees an easy life. Israel’s relationship with God rests first on his grace, which he had already shown in rescuing them from Egypt. The command to keep his law is the way they express their trust and gratitude, not the price of admission.

The Context of Deuteronomy 6:17

Deuteronomy is presented as Moses’s final series of addresses to Israel before his death and before they cross the Jordan River. The book is traditionally attributed to Moses, and the original audience is the generation that grew up in the wilderness, many of whom had not witnessed the events at Sinai. Moses is re-explaining God’s law to them, urging them to take it into the land they are about to inherit.

The verses just before this one warn against following other gods and against testing the LORD as the people did at Massah. Those warnings show that the command to keep his law is set against the danger of wandering from him once they are settled and prosperous. The verses just after it describe doing what is right so that life goes well and the people possess the land, and they introduce a child asking what these laws mean. That question gives the instruction a generational purpose: keeping the commands is meant to be explained and handed down.

Key Phrases in Deuteronomy 6:17

Deuteronomy 6:5

You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your might.

(WEB)

This verse, given just before the passage, calls for loving the LORD with all of your heart, soul, and strength. It shows the motive behind diligent obedience: keeping the commands flows from love for God rather than mere duty.

Psalm 119:4

You have commanded your precepts, that we should fully obey them.

(WEB)

This verse from the psalm about God’s law expresses the same conviction that his precepts are to be kept carefully. It shows how later Israelite worshipers prayed and reflected on the very commitment Moses describes.

A Short Prayer From Deuteronomy 6:17

Lord, you have given me your commands, your testimonies, and your statutes, and I thank you for showing me how to live. Help me to keep them diligently, not only when it is easy or when others are watching, but in the small choices of each day. Let my faithfulness grow steady and sincere, rooted in love for you. Give me the wisdom to explain your ways to those who come after me. Amen.
