Ephesians 3:18 Explained

By

Ephesians 3:18 is Paul’s prayer that Christian believers would be strengthened so they can understand, together with the whole church, how wide, long, high and deep the love of Christ really is. The point is not a mental puzzle but a deeper, shared grasp of a love too large to measure fully. Paul wrote this letter to the churches in and around Ephesus, and in this prayer he speaks directly to the people who have come to trust Jesus.

May be strengthened to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and height and depth…

What Ephesians 3:18 Means

The verse begins with a prayer for strength. Paul does not ask that believers would simply know more facts. He asks that they would be strengthened, which suggests that understanding divine love takes inner resources God himself must supply. The word “comprehend” means to grasp or take hold of something fully, though Paul’s next verse makes clear that love this large is never completely mastered.

The four dimensions named in the verse, width, length, height and depth, are not a formula to decode. Paul uses them the way a person might say they want to see the full size of something, reaching for every direction at once. The image is of a love that spreads out in all directions and cannot be contained by any single measure.

What the verse does not do is give a checklist of how much love a believer must feel before they qualify. It also does not promise instant, complete clarity. It describes a prayer and a process: strengthening, shared understanding, and a gradual reaching toward something bigger than any one person can hold alone.

The Context of Ephesians 3:18

Ephesians is traditionally attributed to Paul, written while he was in prison, and it is addressed to believers who were a mix of Jewish and Gentile backgrounds. Chapter 3 shows Paul reflecting on how those former outsiders now share fully in God’s family. That shared belonging is the setting for his prayer about love that everyone must grow to understand together.

The verses just before and after make the prayer clearer. In verse 17 Paul asks that Christ would dwell in their hearts through faith, and that they would be rooted and grounded in love. Verse 19 then says the love of Christ surpasses knowledge, and verse 20 praises God as able to do far more than we ask or imagine. So the prayer is framed by trust in God’s power, and Paul is not asking believers to measure love by their own effort but to be carried into its depth.

Key Phrases in Ephesians 3:18

Romans 8:38-39

38 For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from God’s love, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Paul’s list of things that cannot separate believers from God’s love shows the same boundless quality described in Ephesians 3:18. Reading the two together helps you see that the love of Christ is both vast in scope and secure in its reach.

1 John 4:16

We know and have believed the love which God has for us. God is love, and he who remains in love remains in God, and God remains in him.

John’s statement that we have come to know and believe the love God has for us connects directly to the idea of growing in understanding. It reminds the reader that knowing this love is tied to trusting it and living in it.

A Short Prayer From Ephesians 3:18

Lord, I confess that I often try to measure your love by how I feel or how I perform. Strengthen me by your Spirit so that I can grasp, even a little more, how wide and long and high and deep your love for me is. Help me to share this growing understanding with the people you have placed around me, so that we can know your love together. Thank you that your love is greater than anything I can ask or imagine. Amen.
