Ephesians 5:22 Context

By
Elizabeth Garcia

Ephesians 5:22 tells wives to willingly place themselves under the leadership of their own husbands, and it grounds that calling in their devotion to the Lord rather than in a bare command. The apostle Paul wrote this line in a letter addressed to the Christian churches in and around Ephesus, and he wrote it to wives within those congregations, who were learning how faith should shape their marriages in a world that had its own firm expectations about husbands and wives.

Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord.

What Ephesians 5:22 Means

The phrase “be subject” comes from a word that describes voluntarily arranging yourself under another person, the way a soldier falls into rank or a team member supports a shared plan. It is not the language of a slave to a master. Paul uses the same verb in verse 21, where all believers are asked to subject themselves to one another. So the verse is not describing a one-way arrangement that applies only to women. It describes how a wife, out of reverence for Christ, chooses to honor her husband’s role in the household.

The words “as to the Lord” are the heart of the sentence. Paul does not ask wives to submit because husbands deserve unlimited authority or because women are inferior. He asks them to bring the same attitude they would bring to Jesus into their marriages. The verse does not promise that every husband will behave well, and it does not excuse harm, control, or abuse. Paul’s larger passage makes clear that husbands are also bound to a demanding standard of sacrificial love.

The Context of Ephesians 5:22

Ephesians is traditionally attributed to Paul, though some scholars have questioned that and date it a little later. Whatever its exact author, the letter is a sustained reflection on the church as one body united in Christ. Chapters 4 and 5 turn from that big picture to daily life, urging believers to walk in love, avoid darkness, and be filled with the Spirit. Verse 22 belongs to a list of household relationships that follows.

The verses just before it, 19 through 21, call believers to sing together, give thanks, and submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. Verse 22 begins a new paragraph within that thought, and verse 25 turns the instruction directly to husbands. Read this way, the verse is one part of a mutual pattern in which everyone is shaped by the same Christlike humility. It is not a standalone rule detached from the call to love and serve.

Key Phrases in Ephesians 5:22

Ephesians 5:25

Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the assembly, and gave himself up for it…

This verse turns the instruction to husbands, who are called to love their wives as Christ loved the church. Reading it alongside verse 22 shows that the marriage relationship is marked by mutual self-giving rather than by one partner’s authority alone.

1 Peter 3:7

You husbands, in the same way, live with your wives according to knowledge, giving honor to the woman, as to the weaker vessel, as being also joint heirs of the grace of life; that your prayers may not be hindered.

Peter addresses husbands here, asking them to live with their wives in understanding and to honor them as fellow heirs of God’s grace. It is a helpful companion text that reinforces the dignity and respect owed in every marriage.

A Short Prayer From Ephesians 5:22

Lord, you have shown me that every relationship can become a place to honor you. Where I have resisted, make my heart willing. Where I have been proud, make me humble. Teach me to speak honestly, to listen with patience, and to trust that you see what I cannot see. Shape my marriage around your love, so that my devotion to you guides every choice I make and every word I speak.

Protect the home you have entrusted to us, and guard us from anything that would turn respect into fear or love into control. Let my husband and me grow together in grace, serving one another as we serve you. Amen.
