BIBLEREADER // SOPHIE GARDNER

This evening prayer for compassion is for the end of the day, when you are tired and your heart still feels tender toward someone you struggled to love, help or be patient with. You can pray it aloud at bedtime exactly as written, or read it once and then speak in your own words. Either way, it asks God to soften what has hardened in you and to give you a kinder heart before you sleep.

Evening Prayer for Compassion

Father, the day is ending, and I bring it to you as it is. I think of the moments I was short with someone, the words I said too quickly, and the times I looked past a person who needed me to stop. Forgive me where I failed to see others clearly. Show me where my tiredness made me careless with the people you put in my path, my family, my coworkers, the stranger in the checkout line, the friend who is hurting and too proud to say so.

Lord, give me eyes to notice what I usually miss. Let me remember that everyone I met today was carrying something I could not see. Give me a patient spirit for the people who test me most, and tender words for the ones who are grieving, afraid or worn down. Where I was unkind, let me make it right tomorrow. Where I was kind, let me give thanks, and keep the good I did from turning into pride. Guard my heart tonight, and let your compassion settle over me the way you settle the night over the earth. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am too tired to say much tonight. Soften my heart toward the people I failed today, and toward the ones I have been holding at a distance. Show me one person I can pray for by name, and give me the grace to forgive what I could not let go of. Let your mercy be the last thing I think about before I sleep. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Pray this when you feel you have run out of patience. Thank God that his mercy has not run out, and ask him to renew your compassion for the morning ahead.

Colossians 3:12

Put on therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, a heart of compassion, kindness, lowliness, humility, and perseverance…

(WEB)

Pray this as a way of putting on compassion, naming the particular virtues you need: kindness, humility, gentleness and patience, one at a time.

Micah 6:8

He has shown you, O man, what is good. What does the LORD require of you, but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?

(WEB)

Pray this to ask God to shape your daily choices, so that tonight you can review the day and see where you acted justly and where you need to love mercy more.

Ephesians 4:32

And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you.

(WEB)

Pray this for anyone you still resent. Ask God to help you be tender-hearted toward them and to forgive them as you have been forgiven.

Psalm 103:13

Like a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him.

(WEB)

Pray this when you feel ashamed of your failures today. Rest in the picture of a father who is tender toward his children, and ask God to make you more like him.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer at the end of the day, once the lights are low and before you reach for your phone. Sit on the edge of your bed or in a chair by the window, and let your hands rest open in your lap. If you find it helpful, hold something small in your hand, such as a ring or a smooth stone, and let it remind you to loosen your grip on the day’s irritations.

You can also pray this with someone you live with. A spouse, a roommate or a child can take turns reading one paragraph each, which helps when you are too tired to pray on your own. Afterward, name one person from the day you want to remember, and ask God to show you how to care for them tomorrow.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who sees every hidden struggle give you rest tonight. May his compassion meet you in the quiet, forgive what you could not carry well today, and fill you with patience for the morning. Go to sleep knowing that the same mercy that holds the world will hold you too.
