BIBLEREADER // SOPHIE GARDNER

This evening prayer for peace is for the end of the day, when the house is quiet and your mind will not stop replaying what happened, what was left undone, and what tomorrow will bring. Pray it at bedtime or as you sit down in the evening. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words in the same spirit.

Evening Prayer for Peace

Lord, the day is ending, and I bring it to you as it is. Some of it went well, and I thank you for those good moments: the meal we shared, the kind word from a friend, the work that came together, the strength you gave me when I was tired. Some of it went badly. I said things I wish I hadn’t, I felt worried about money and health, and I carried a weight I was never meant to carry alone. I set all of it down now, in your presence.

Be my rest tonight. Quiet the thoughts that circle back to the same fears, and steady my heart so that I can sleep without bracing for the morning. Watch over the people I love, those in my home and those far away, and keep them safe in the dark hours. Guard the children, the sick, the ones who cannot sleep, and the ones who have no bed to lie down in. Where there is fear in this house or in my own mind, make it still. Give me peace that does not depend on how the day went, and let me wake knowing you were awake too. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am tired and my mind is full. I give you the day, the worries, and the people on my heart. Calm me now and take the weight off my shoulders. Keep watch over my family while I sleep. Let me rest in your care tonight, and wake in your peace. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as you lie down, letting the words settle the question of who is keeping you safe tonight. Name your fears one at a time, and then say that you will lie down in God’s keeping.

Psalm 3:5

I laid myself down and slept. I awakened; for the LORD sustains me.

(WEB)

Use this verse to remember times when you slept through the night despite what was going on around you. Thank God for those nights, and ask for the same steadiness again.

Isaiah 26:3

You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.

(WEB)

Pray this slowly, pausing on the idea of a mind kept steady. Bring the specific thought that keeps you awake and ask God to hold it, so your attention can rest on him.

John 14:27

Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, give I to you. Don’t let your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful.

(WEB)

Read this as Jesus speaking directly to you at the end of your day. Ask him to give you the kind of peace the world cannot take away, and to remind you of it when worry returns.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

Pray this when you feel you must finish everything before you can rest. Admit to God what you could not get done, and receive sleep as a gift he gives to his beloved.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray it at the moment you turn out the light or sit down on the edge of the bed, after the phone is set aside. Keep the room dim and quiet. Some people find it helps to fold their hands or to rest one palm on the pillow or the Bible while they speak. If the list of worries is long, say the prayer slowly, pausing after each sentence to let it sink in.

If you share a home, pray it aloud so others can hear, or let a spouse, child, or roommate pray the blessing over you. You might also pray it with someone on the phone who is far away, taking turns with each paragraph. Tonight’s prayer does not have to be perfect. It only needs to be honest, and God already knows what you are carrying.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps watch over you give you rest tonight and peace in your heart. May he guard your sleep, calm every anxious thought, and meet you with mercy when you wake. Go to bed in his care, and let his peace be the last thing you hold.
