BIBLEREADER // SOPHIE GARDNER

This evening prayer for self control is for the end of the day, when you look back at the words you spoke, the impulses you gave in to, and the moments you wish you had handled differently. Pray it before bed, on the drive home, or while sitting on the edge of the bed with your phone still in your hand. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own words to the day.

Evening Prayer for Self Control

Lord, I come to you at the end of this day tired and somewhat ashamed. I snapped at someone I love when I was already worn out. I reached for my phone when I meant to be present. I ate or spent or scrolled past the point I intended to stop. You see all of it, and you do not turn away from me. Thank you for the grace that meets me here, and for the fact that my worth does not rise or fall with how well I managed my appetites today.

Tonight I ask you to take the parts of me that feel out of control and hold them steady. Quiet the urge to answer back, the pull toward one more episode, the habit that runs ahead of my good intentions. Give me a clearer sense of what I can carry and what I need to set down. Where I failed, let me confess it honestly, receive your forgiveness, and not carry the guilt into tomorrow. Help me see the next right step, even if it is small.

Now I release this day into your hands. Guard my sleep and my heart through the night. Let my body rest and my mind settle, so that I wake up with a fresh measure of patience, wisdom, and restraint that comes from you and not from my own strength. Thank you for being faithful when I am not. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am tempted again, and I do not trust myself right now. Give me the strength to pause before I speak, to put this down before I pick up the next thing, and to choose what is good over what is merely wanted. Forgive me for what I have already done today. Hold me together until morning. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Galatians 5:22-23

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, 23 gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

(WEB)

Paul lists self-control among the fruit of the Spirit, which means it grows as you stay close to God rather than being produced by willpower alone. Pray these words as a request that the Spirit would cultivate this quality in you tonight.

Proverbs 25:28

Like a city that is broken down and without walls is a man whose spirit is without restraint.

(WEB)

The proverb pictures a city with broken walls, open to every raider, which is an apt image for a life without restraint. Pray it as a plea that God would rebuild the walls around your heart and mind.

Romans 8:1

There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who don’t walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.

(WEB)

When you fall short in self-control, this verse reminds you that condemnation is not the answer. Pray it with gratitude, thanking God that your standing before him rests on Christ and not on your record for the day.

Psalm 4:4

Stand in awe, and don’t sin. Search your own heart on your bed, and be still. Selah.

(WEB)

This verse invites you to be angry without sinning and to reflect quietly on your bed. Use it as an evening prayer for a calm heart, asking God to help you examine your anger and let it go before sleep.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul connects anxiety with prayer and promises a peace that guards the heart and mind. Pray this as you hand over the worries that drive impulsive choices, trusting God to hold what you cannot control.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a consistent moment, such as after you turn off the lights or right before you plug in your phone to charge across the room. Sit on the edge of your bed or kneel beside it, and place one hand on your chest or open it palm-up in your lap. The physical gesture helps slow your breathing and gives your restless body something to do while your mind settles.

If you share a home, consider praying this prayer with your spouse, a roommate, or a friend who is also working on self-control. Taking turns reading one paragraph each can make the words land more deeply, and it gives you someone to check in with in the morning about how the next day went.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord guard your going out and your coming in, and may the peace of God settle over your thoughts as the day ends. May you rest without shame, wake with clarity, and find that the strength you need arrives one faithful step at a time.
