BIBLEREADER // ELIZABETH GARCIA

Exodus 6:22 is a short genealogy entry that names the three sons of Uzziel, a grandson of Levi. In plain terms, the verse is recording who the male descendants of one Levite family were, so that Israel’s tribal lineage can be traced accurately. It appears in a list spoken by the narrator of the book of Exodus, written for the Israelite community, and it is one part of a longer account of the families that carried the family line of Moses and Aaron forward.

What Exodus 6:22 Means

The verse begins with “The sons of Uzziel,” which tells you the list is organized by father and then by children. Uzziel was a son of Kohath, and his line belonged to the Kohathites, one of the three main Levite clans. The word “sons” here is used in the broad Hebrew sense of descendants, so it can include later generations even when only the immediate names are given.

The three names that follow, Mishael, Elzaphan, and Sithri, are simply the people the record names as Uzziel’s sons. The verse does not describe their deeds, their faith, or their roles, and it does not promise anything to them or to the reader. Its purpose is to preserve an accurate record, which mattered greatly to a people who had to prove their tribal and priestly identity.

What the verse does not do is tell you about a personal blessing or instruction for your own life. It is a genealogical marker. Its value lies in showing that God’s people were carefully counted and remembered, and that each family within Israel had a documented place within the larger story.

The Context of Exodus 6:22

Exodus is traditionally attributed to Moses, and it was written for the people of Israel as they moved from slavery in Egypt toward covenant life with God. Chapter 6 comes right after God renews his promise to Moses and sends him back to Pharaoh, and it pauses to establish the family backgrounds of Moses and Aaron before the great confrontations of the plagues begin. That placement shows that the author wanted readers to know exactly which families stood at the center of the story.

The verses immediately before and after Exodus 6:22 list the sons of Merari, then Izhar, then Korah, then the sons of Aaron’s line, and finally Eleazar’s marriage and his son Phinehas. Read together, they move through the Levite clans in an orderly way, and they end by naming the heads of the fathers’ houses. Seen this way, Uzziel’s sons are one piece of a larger structure, and the list reminds the reader that God’s work in Israel was carried out through real, traceable households.

Key Phrases in Exodus 6:22

Numbers 3:17

These were the sons of Levi by their names: Gershon, and Kohath, and Merari.

(WEB)

This verse lists the sons of Levi by name and assigns them their clan roles. It shows the same concern for accurate Levite records that appears in Exodus 6:22, and it helps explain why the families of Kohath, including Uzziel’s line, were carefully distinguished from the others.

1 Chronicles 6:2

The sons of Kohath: Amram, Izhar, and Hebron, and Uzziel.

(WEB)

This passage traces the Kohathite line from Levi through Kohath and Amram, and it places Uzziel’s family within that larger genealogy. Reading it alongside Exodus 6:22 shows how the Chronicler later returned to these family records to affirm the continuity of Israel’s priestly and Levite service.

A Short Prayer From Exodus 6:22

Lord, you know every name written in your word and every family you have gathered into your purposes. Thank you that you do not overlook the ordinary people who carried your work forward across the generations. Help me to honor the names and stories of those who came before me, and to see my own life as part of the faithful line you are still building. Teach me to serve quietly where you have placed me, trusting that you remember and value every faithful life. Amen.
