BIBLEREADER // ELIZABETH KIM

Galatians 5:25 tells Christians that the Spirit is the source of their new life, and so the Spirit should also set the direction of their daily conduct. Paul is saying that a believer who has been made alive by God should keep in step with that life in ordinary choices, not drift back into old patterns. The verse is written by the apostle Paul to the churches in the region of Galatia, a group of congregations he had founded and who were being pulled toward rules and rituals as a way of standing right with God.

If we live by the Spirit, let’s also walk by the Spirit.

What Galatians 5:25 Means

The verse begins with “If we live by the Spirit.” Paul is not asking whether believers have the Spirit. He takes it as settled that they have received new life through faith in Christ, and he uses the word “live” to describe that life as the foundation of everything else. The Spirit is the one who brings this life and sustains it.

The second half, “let’s also walk by the Spirit,” shifts the image to movement. In Paul’s writing, “walk” is a common way of describing how a person conducts their whole life, step by step. The Greek construction here is an exhortation: since the Spirit has given life, let the Spirit guide each step. The verb has a sense of keeping in line, the way soldiers or travelers move together in order. It is a call to ongoing dependence, not a one-time decision.

What the verse does not promise is a life free of struggle or a formula that guarantees perfect behavior. Paul is describing a relationship and a direction. Believers still face temptation, which the surrounding verses make clear, but the verse insists that the Spirit, not the flesh, should set the pace.

The Context of Galatians 5:25

The letter to the Galatians is one of Paul’s most passionate writings. Its central argument is that people are declared right with God through faith in Christ and not through works of the law. Some teachers had come into the Galatian churches insisting that Gentile believers must be circumcised and keep Jewish customs. Paul pushes back hard, arguing that the Galatians began their life with God by the Spirit and should not try to finish it by the flesh.

Verse 25 sits at the close of a passage about the two ways of living. Verses 22 and 23 describe the fruit of the Spirit, the qualities such as love, joy, peace and self-control that the Spirit produces. Verse 24 speaks of those who belong to Christ having crucified the flesh with its desires. Verse 26, which follows, warns against conceit and envy. Read in that setting, verse 25 is the hinge: the Spirit has given life, so the Spirit produces the character described before and guards against the sins described after.

Key Phrases in Galatians 5:25

Romans 8:14

For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are children of God.

Paul makes a similar point here, saying that those led by the Spirit of God are God’s children. Where Galatians 5:25 calls believers to walk in step with the Spirit, Romans 8:14 explains that being led by the Spirit is the mark of belonging to God.

Galatians 5:22

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith…

This verse opens the list of the fruit of the Spirit that Paul describes just before verse 25. It shows the kind of character a life guided by the Spirit produces, which gives concrete content to what walking by the Spirit looks like.

A Short Prayer From Galatians 5:25

Father, thank you that you have given me life through your Spirit and not because of anything I have earned. I confess that I often try to live by my own strength, reacting to people and pressures as if I were on my own. Please help me to keep in step with your Spirit today, in the small decisions as well as the large ones. Shape my words, my thoughts, and my choices so that they reflect the life you have placed within me. Amen.
