Genesis 9:5 means that God will hold every creature and every person accountable for the taking of human life, and that human blood is precious to him because human beings bear his image. The verse is God speaking to Noah and his sons after the flood, as they stepped into a world being given to them again.

I will surely require your life’s blood. At the hand of every animal I will require it. At the hand of man, even at the hand of every man’s brother, I will require the life of man.

What Genesis 9:5 Means

The verse opens with God saying he will surely require a person’s life’s blood. The phrase “life’s blood” refers to the lifeblood, the thing that makes a living creature alive, and in the Hebrew mindset blood carried life itself. When God says he will require it, he is stating that taking life is never a matter he overlooks. He keeps account of it.

Then the verse moves through three steps: first animals, then man, then the brother of man. The sentence says that if an animal takes a human life, God will require that life from the animal, and if a person takes a human life, God will require it from that person, even when the one who kills is a brother or relative. The repetition makes plain that no one, human or beast, stands outside God’s reckoning when human blood is spilled.

What the verse does not do is spell out the human courts, punishments or procedures that would follow. It states God’s own accountability and sets the foundation for the law of the next verse. It does not describe every case of violence or promise that every wrong will be settled in this life, and it should not be stretched to say more than it does.

The Context of Genesis 9:5

Genesis is the first book of the Torah, traditionally attributed to Moses, and it tells the story of creation, the fall, the flood and the beginnings of the nations. The audience of this passage is Noah and his sons, the family who came out of the ark and became the ancestors of the whole human race. They stand at the start of a new world, so the words carry the weight of a founding charge rather than a single rule for one community.

The verses just before it describe God giving humanity dominion over the animals and permitting them to eat moving creatures, with one limit: flesh with its life, which is its blood, must not be eaten. Verse 6 then gives the ground for the principle, that man was made in God’s own image, and verse 7 repeats the command to be fruitful and multiply. Read this way, the concern with blood and the value of human life grow out of the dignity of being made in God’s image.

Key Phrases in Genesis 9:5

Genesis 9:6

Whoever sheds man’s blood, his blood will be shed by man, for God made man in his own image.

This verse follows directly and gives the reason for the principle in Genesis 9:5, namely that humanity is made in God’s image. It shows that the sanctity of human life is grounded in who people are before God, not merely in a rule imposed from outside.

Exodus 20:13

“You shall not murder.

(WEB)

This command from the Ten Commandments addresses the taking of human life directly. Reading it alongside Genesis 9:5 helps you see that the prohibition on murder runs through the whole of Scripture as a consistent expression of God’s concern for every human life.

A Short Prayer From Genesis 9:5

Lord, you are the one who sees every life and remembers every death. Thank you that human blood is precious to you because we bear your image. Guard our hearts from anger that would lead us toward harm, and give us patience when we are wronged. Comfort those who have lost someone to violence, and make us people who protect and honor the lives you have made. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
