BIBLEREADER // ELIZABETH KIM

Hebrews 10:39 is the writer’s confident declaration that the community he is addressing belongs to the people who keep trusting God, not the people who give up and fall away. He is not speaking as a stranger to the church. He is the author of the letter to the Hebrews, writing to Jewish Christians who were tempted to abandon their faith under pressure, and he counts himself and his readers among those who persevere.

But we are not of those who shrink back to destruction, but of those who have faith to the saving of the soul.

What Hebrews 10:39 Means

The verse is built on a contrast between two directions a person can travel. One direction is “shrinking back,” a word that describes pulling away from a danger or a demand, like someone who flinches from a hard step. The writer says that this path leads to destruction, meaning ruin and loss rather than life with God. The other direction is faith, which the writer describes as the kind of trust that results in the “saving of the soul,” meaning the rescue and wholeness of the whole person before God.

Notice what the verse does not say. It does not claim that believers will never struggle, doubt, or feel the urge to retreat. The author writes “we are not of those who shrink back,” which is a statement about the settled direction of his community, not a promise that no one ever stumbles. It also does not describe faith as a feeling. Faith here is a steady orientation of trust that keeps moving toward God even when the cost is high.

The Context of Hebrews 10:39

Hebrews was written to a group of Jewish believers who had already endured public insults, imprisonment, and the loss of property for their confession of Jesus (see Hebrews 10:32-34). Now some of them seem to be drifting back toward the familiar comforts of their former life, perhaps the sacrificial system of the temple or the protection of their community’s approval. The author warns them repeatedly against this drift, and the surrounding verses give the reason: they need endurance so that they may receive the promise (Hebrews 10:36).

Just before Hebrews 10:39, the author quotes Habakkuk 2:3-4, “the righteous will live by faith,” and warns that if someone shrinks back, God takes no pleasure in him. Verse 39 answers that warning directly. The author places his readers on the side of faith, not as a reproach, but as an encouragement to live out what they already are. That is why the verse reads as reassurance inside a sharp warning: it is an invitation to stay where God has already placed them.

Key Phrases in Hebrews 10:39

Hebrews 11:1

Now faith is assurance of things hoped for, proof of things not seen.

(WEB)

This verse opens the great chapter on faith that follows directly after Hebrews 10:39. It gives a definition of faith as confident assurance about what is hoped for, which helps explain what it means to be among those who have faith rather than those who shrink back.

Romans 8:38-39

38 For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from God’s love, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

(WEB)

Paul’s assurance that nothing can separate believers from God’s love gives strong support to the confidence the author of Hebrews expresses. Both passages hold together God’s faithfulness and the call to keep trusting him through hardship.

A Short Prayer From Hebrews 10:39

Lord, you know how tempted I am to pull back when the road gets hard and the answers do not come. Keep my heart from shrinking back out of fear or weariness. Give me faith that trusts your promises even when I cannot see the end of the story, and help me take the next faithful step today. Thank you that you are not ashamed of those who keep coming to you, and that your saving work is larger than my doubts. Amen.
