BIBLEREADER // ELIZABETH GARCIA

Hebrews 11:22 tells us that Joseph, near the end of his life, trusted God’s promise that Israel would leave Egypt, and so he spoke about that future departure and gave instructions about his own bones. The verse shows faith looking ahead to something not yet seen. The writer of Hebrews, traditionally held to be a Christian teacher writing to Jewish believers, uses this example to encourage readers who needed to trust God’s promises from a distance.

By faith, Joseph, when his end was near, made mention of the departure of the children of Israel; and gave instructions concerning his bones.

What Hebrews 11:22 Means

The phrase “by faith” opens the verse and governs everything after it. Joseph is not shown winning a battle or receiving a miracle at this point. He is shown acting on a promise he would not live to see fulfilled. The verse describes a man who was dying in a foreign land, yet he spoke about his people leaving that land as if it were settled.

“Made mention of the departure of the children of Israel” refers to Joseph’s words about the coming exodus. Earlier in Genesis, Joseph told his brothers that God would surely visit them and bring them up out of Egypt. The verse does not promise that the reader’s own circumstances will turn around, nor does it guarantee any specific outcome in your life. It describes how a believer held on to God’s word about the future.

The instruction about his bones shows the same trust in action. Joseph asked that his remains be carried out of Egypt when the time came. He was planning for a day he would never see, which is a quiet and practical form of faith.

The Context of Hebrews 11:22

Hebrews 11 is often called the faith chapter. It lists men and women from Israel’s history whose lives demonstrated trust in God. Verses 19 through 25 move through the patriarchs in order: Abraham’s willingness to trust God even about the dead, then Isaac blessing his sons, Jacob blessing Joseph’s sons while leaning on his staff, then Joseph here, followed by Moses and his parents. Each example begins with the same words, “by faith,” which gives the chapter its steady rhythm.

Read in that setting, Joseph’s act is a link in a chain of faithful generations. Verse 21 ends with Jacob dying in faith, and verse 22 picks up with Joseph also near death. Verse 23 then introduces Moses, whose exodus Joseph had anticipated. The sequence shows that God’s promises passed from one generation to the next, and the verse reads as part of a larger story of God keeping his word across centuries.

Key Phrases in Hebrews 11:22

Genesis 50:24

This verse records Joseph’s own words to his brothers about God visiting them and bringing them out of Egypt, along with his request about his bones. It is the original source of the promise Hebrews 11:22 describes, and reading it shows the faith behind the later commendation.

Hebrews 11:1

Now faith is assurance of things hoped for, proof of things not seen.

This verse gives the chapter’s definition of faith as confidence in what is hoped for and assurance about what is not seen. It explains the pattern that Joseph’s example illustrates and helps you understand why the author highlights these ordinary moments of trust.

A Short Prayer From Hebrews 11:22

Lord, you kept your word to Joseph even when he could not see its fulfillment, and you kept it to his descendants across many years. Help me to trust you in the same way, with the decisions in front of me and with the future I cannot yet see. Give me the courage to act on what I know of your faithfulness, and let my daily choices reflect confidence in your promises. Thank you that your word does not fail, even when my own plans do. Amen.
