BIBLEREADER // ELIZABETH GARCIA

Hebrews 9:23 says that the earthly copies of heavenly realities were purified with animal blood, but the heavenly realities themselves required a better sacrifice. The author is explaining why Christ’s death was superior to the Old Testament sacrificial system. The writer of Hebrews speaks to Jewish Christians who knew the temple rituals well and were tempted to return to them.

It was necessary therefore that the copies of the things in the heavens should be cleansed with these; but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.

What Hebrews 9:23 Means

The phrase “copies of the things in the heavens” refers to the earthly tabernacle and its furnishings, which the author treats as copies or shadows of the true heavenly sanctuary. Those copies were cleansed with the blood of animals, as the Law required. The word “necessary” signals that this pattern was not optional; it was part of how God’s presence was made accessible to a sinful people.

The second half turns to “the heavenly things themselves,” which needed “better sacrifices than these.” The verse does not describe in detail what happens in heaven. It makes a comparison: whatever purification the heavenly realities require, it is greater than the animal sacrifices that cleansed the earthly copies. The verse does not promise that every believer will understand the heavenly sanctuary fully, but it does establish that the sacrifice of Christ is qualitatively better.

The Context of Hebrews 9:23

Hebrews was written to encourage believers facing pressure to abandon their new faith in Christ and return to familiar temple practices. Its author argues throughout that Christ is greater than angels, Moses, and the Levitical priesthood. Chapter 9 compares the earthly tabernacle with the true tabernacle and the sacrifices offered in each.

The verses just before, in Hebrews 9:20 to 22, describe Moses sprinkling blood on the people and the tabernacle, and state that nearly everything was cleansed with blood under the Law. Verse 24 then says Christ entered not an earthly holy place but heaven itself. Read in that setting, verse 23 is the hinge: the earthly system was a pattern pointing toward a heavenly reality, and Christ’s sacrifice fulfills and surpasses it.

Key Phrases in Hebrews 9:23

Hebrews 9:26

Or else he must have suffered often since the foundation of the world. But now once at the end of the ages, he has been revealed to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.

This verse finishes the thought begun in verse 23 by stating that Christ appeared once at the end of the ages to put away sin through his own sacrifice. It shows that the superior sacrifice was offered once, not repeated like the annual offerings of the high priest.

Hebrews 10:14

For by one offering he has perfected forever those who are being sanctified.

(WEB)

Hebrews 10:14 continues the theme by declaring that by one offering Christ has perfected forever those who are being made holy. It draws out the lasting result of the better sacrifice described in chapter 9.

A Short Prayer From Hebrews 9:23

Lord, thank you that the cleansing I need does not depend on my own efforts or the repetition of religious rituals. Thank you that Christ offered a sacrifice better than any copy and that his offering was enough. Help me to rest in that finished work today, to trust your forgiveness, and to live as someone already made clean through him. Amen.
