Jeremiah 1:14 is God’s warning to the prophet Jeremiah that disaster is coming on the people of Judah from the north. The LORD speaks directly to Jeremiah during his first vision, when he is still a young man called to speak for God. The words are addressed to Jeremiah, who is then to pass the message on to the nation.

Then the LORD said to me, “Out of the north, evil will break out on all the inhabitants of the land.

What Jeremiah 1:14 Means

The verse begins with “Then the LORD said to me,” which tells you that the message is not Jeremiah’s own idea. He is hearing a word from God, and the prophetic books consistently present their messages this way. The phrase “out of the north” points to a geographic direction. For Judah, the north was the direction from which armies had long arrived, so the image would have been immediately recognizable to the first readers.

The phrase “evil will break out” is a striking choice. It suggests something that bursts forth, like water through a dam or a fire through dry grass. The verse does not describe the enemy in detail here; the focus is on the coming disruption and its effect on “all the inhabitants of the land.” It does not promise that every individual will be spared or that the nation will avoid consequences. It announces that judgment is on its way and that God is the one who sets it in motion.

The Context of Jeremiah 1:14

The book of Jeremiah is traditionally attributed to the prophet himself, who served in Jerusalem during the years leading up to and including the Babylonian conquest in 586 BC. His audience was the people of Judah and Jerusalem, who had turned to other gods and social injustice despite their covenant with the LORD. Chapter 1 records his call, and the two visions in verses 11 to 14 show God teaching Jeremiah to see clearly before he speaks.

The verses just before this one show an almond branch, a symbol of watchfulness, because the Hebrew word for almond ties to the idea of being awake and alert. God says he watches over his word to carry it out. The verses after describe the kingdoms of the north gathering against Jerusalem and God’s judgment for idolatry. Read in that setting, verse 14 is the first sign of a larger message: the disaster is not random, and it is tied to the people’s unfaithfulness.

Key Phrases in Jeremiah 1:14

Jeremiah 1:8

Don’t be afraid because of them, for I am with you to rescue you,” says the LORD.

This verse comes earlier in the same chapter and shows God’s promise to be with Jeremiah as he speaks. Reading it alongside verse 14 helps you see that the warning was paired with divine assurance, not left to the prophet’s strength alone.

Lamentations 1:1

How the city sits solitary, that was full of people! She has become as a widow, who was great among the nations! She who was a princess among the provinces has become a slave!

Lamentations opens with a grief-filled picture of Jerusalem after the disaster Jeremiah foresaw. Reading it shows how the warning in chapter 1 was fulfilled and how the people felt the cost of their unfaithfulness.

A Short Prayer From Jeremiah 1:14

Lord, you see the paths we walk and you know where they lead. When we ignore your warnings, give us the humility to listen and the courage to turn back. Keep us from confusing your patience with indifference. Help us to take your word seriously in our homes, our work, and our friendships. Remind us that you are faithful to what you have said, and let that truth draw us closer to you. Amen.
