John 1:31 explains the purpose behind John the Baptist’s ministry. He says he did not initially know Jesus, but he came baptizing with water so that Jesus would be revealed to Israel. The verse is spoken by John the Baptist, who is describing his own mission to the people of Israel as the forerunner of the Messiah.

I didn’t know him, but for this reason I came baptizing in water: that he would be revealed to Israel.”

What John 1:31 Means

The phrase “I didn’t know him” is striking. John was the cousin of Jesus, yet he says he did not know Jesus in the sense of recognizing him as the one he had been sent to introduce. His knowledge came from God, not from family connection. The verse therefore emphasizes that John’s recognition of Jesus was a work of divine revelation rather than personal acquaintance.

“For this reason I came baptizing in water” tells us the purpose of John’s baptism. It was a sign of repentance and preparation, meant to prepare hearts for someone greater. The water itself did not save anyone. It pointed beyond itself to the one who was coming. The verse does not promise that baptism alone brings any particular result; it shows John’s role as one who prepares the way.

Finally, “that he would be revealed to Israel” states the goal. John’s work was to make the coming Messiah visible to God’s people. The verse does not claim that everyone who saw John immediately believed in Jesus, but it shows God’s intention to make his Son known. It is a statement of purpose, not a guarantee of how every listener would respond.

The Context of John 1:31

John 1:31 belongs to the Gospel of John, traditionally attributed to the apostle John, written for a readership familiar with Jewish expectations of the Messiah. The passage opens the public testimony of John the Baptist, set in Bethany beyond the Jordan. Just before this verse, John has pointed to Jesus as “the Lamb of God” and as one who existed before him, which frames why John’s ministry was preparatory.

The verses that follow, 32 through 34, show John explaining how he came to know who Jesus was: by seeing the Spirit descend and remain on him. Read in this setting, verse 31 is the reason behind that witness. John baptized so that a sign would appear, and the sign confirmed Jesus’s identity. The verse therefore links John’s practical work with the revelation that followed.

Key Phrases in John 1:31

John 1:29

The next day, he saw Jesus coming to him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

(WEB)

This verse comes just before John 1:31 and shows John pointing to Jesus as the Lamb of God. Reading it alongside verse 31 helps you see that John’s baptism was a preparation for the moment when he could publicly identify Jesus.

Malachi 3:1

“Behold, I send my messenger, and he will prepare the way before me; and the Lord, whom you seek, will suddenly come to his temple; and the messenger of the covenant, whom you desire, behold, he comes!” says the LORD of Armies.

This Old Testament promise speaks of a messenger sent to prepare the way before the Lord. Christians have long read it as anticipating John the Baptist’s role, which helps explain why John saw his mission as fulfilling God’s earlier promise.

A Short Prayer From John 1:31

Father, I confess that there are many things about you that I have not yet understood. Help me to be honest about my limits and to trust you to reveal what I need to know. Thank you for sending people who point toward your Son. Give me a willing heart to prepare the way for others to meet Jesus, even in quiet and ordinary ways. Reveal yourself to me again today, and help me to walk faithfully in the work you have given me. Amen.
