John 1:31 Meaning: Why John Baptized to Reveal Jesus

By
Elizabeth Kim

John 1:31 explains why John the Baptist was baptizing with water: so that Jesus would be made known to Israel. John says he did not recognize Jesus beforehand, and his ministry of baptism had a single purpose, to point the nation toward the one who was coming. The words are spoken by John the Baptist himself, a prophet standing by the Jordan River, and they are addressed to the crowds and to the people around him who would soon hear his testimony about Jesus.

I didn’t know him, but for this reason I came baptizing in water: that he would be revealed to Israel.”

What John 1:31 Means

The verse opens with John admitting, “I didn’t know him.” This is a striking confession from a man whose whole role was to prepare the way for the Messiah. John is saying that his own knowledge of Jesus did not come from acquaintance or prior insight. The recognition came from God’s direction, which is why the verse goes on to explain the purpose of his baptizing.

The phrase “for this reason I came baptizing in water” tells you that John’s water baptism was intentional and tied to a divine plan. He was not simply starting a religious movement for its own sake. His baptism was a sign meant to draw attention to someone greater who would follow. The goal stated in the final clause is that Jesus “would be revealed to Israel.” The verse promises nothing about personal blessings or outcomes. It describes what John’s mission was for, which was to make the identity of the Messiah visible to God’s people.

The Context of John 1:31

The Gospel of John was written in the late first century and is traditionally attributed to the apostle John, the disciple Jesus loved. Its audience is generally understood to be a mix of Jewish and Gentile readers who needed to see clearly that Jesus is the Son of God. The author places this scene in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John the Baptist was baptizing, and he records it as the start of a sequence in which several figures begin to recognize who Jesus is.

Just before verse 31, John the Baptist calls Jesus “the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world” and explains that the one coming after him was before him. Verses 32 through 34 then describe the Spirit descending like a dove and remaining on Jesus, which is the sign John said would identify the Messiah. Read in that setting, verse 31 is the hinge between John’s introduction of Jesus and his confirmation that he has seen the sign, so the purpose of the baptism becomes clear.

Key Phrases in John 1:31

John 1:32

John testified, saying, “I have seen the Spirit descending like a dove out of heaven, and it remained on him.

In the verse right after John 1:31, John describes seeing the Spirit descend on Jesus. This shows how the revelation promised in verse 31 actually happened, through a visible sign that confirmed Jesus’s identity.

Isaiah 40:3

The voice of one who calls out, “Prepare the way of the LORD in the wilderness! Make a level highway in the desert for our God.

This Old Testament prophecy speaks of a voice calling to prepare the way of the Lord. Christians have long read it as describing John the Baptist’s role, which helps explain why his baptizing was aimed at preparing Israel for the coming of God.

A Short Prayer From John 1:31

Lord, you have a plan that reaches far beyond what I can see from where I stand. Like John, I want to be faithful in the part you have given me, even when my role is to point to someone else. Help me to hold my knowledge loosely and to rely on your guidance, especially when I feel uncertain about what you are doing. Use my life, however small, to help others come to know Jesus more clearly. Keep my heart humble and my eyes fixed on him. Amen.
