BIBLEREADER // ELIZABETH GARCIA

John 1:4 says that life is found in Jesus, and that this life is the light that shows people who they are and where they stand before God. The verse is the opening theology of John’s Gospel, spoken by the narrator in the prologue rather than by any character in the story. It is addressed to every reader who wants to know who Jesus is and why he matters to the human race.

In him was life, and the life was the light of men.

What John 1:4 Means

The phrase “In him was life” tells you that life does not come from anywhere else. The Word, whom John has just identified as God and as the one through whom all things were made, is the source of living existence. Life is not an abstract idea here. It is something that flows from a person, and John wants you to see that the person is Jesus.

The second half, “the life was the light of men,” takes that life and describes what it does for people. Light in the Bible often means truth, understanding, and God’s presence making things visible. John is saying that the life which comes from Jesus lets human beings see clearly, both about God and about themselves. The verse does not promise that every person will automatically accept this light. It states what Jesus is and what he offers, and it leaves the response to the reader.

The Context of John 1:4

John 1:4 sits inside the prologue of the Gospel of John, which runs from verse 1 to verse 18. The Gospel is traditionally attributed to the apostle John, the disciple who is often described as the one Jesus loved. Its first readers were most likely Christians in the late first century, a community that needed clear reasons to trust that Jesus was more than a teacher or prophet. The prologue answers that need by placing Jesus at the beginning of creation itself.

The verses just before and after help show the meaning. Verse 3 says that all things were made through the Word, so the life and light of verse 4 belong to the same person who created the world. Verse 5 follows with the claim that the light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it. Read in that sequence, verse 4 is the bridge between creation and the rescue of a world that has turned away from its source, and it sets up the arrival of John the Baptist as a witness to that light in verses 6 and 7.

Key Phrases in John 1:4

Psalm 36:9

For with you is the spring of life. In your light shall we see light.

This verse from the Psalms also pairs life with light, declaring that God is the fountain of life and that in his light people see light. It shows that John’s language about life and light draws on an older tradition in Israel’s worship, where God himself was the source of both.

1 John 1:5

This is the message which we have heard from him and announce to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.

(WEB)

This verse from John’s first letter repeats the picture of God as light and says that in God there is no darkness at all. It helps the reader see that the light named in the Gospel prologue is the same character of God that the apostle later describes in practical terms of how believers should walk.

A Short Prayer From John 1:4

Lord Jesus, you are the source of my life, and I come to you this morning aware of how often I look for life somewhere else. Show me where I am trusting my own strength or the approval of others instead of you. Let your light reach the parts of my thinking that feel confused or ashamed, so that I can see myself and my circumstances as you see them. Help me stay close to you today, and let your life shape the way I speak, work, and treat the people I meet. Amen.
