BIBLEREADER // ELIZABETH GARCIA

John 11:25 means that Jesus himself is the source of resurrection and eternal life, and that trusting him gives a believer life that death cannot end. Jesus speaks these words to Martha, whose brother Lazarus has died, at a moment when she is grieving and unsure what to expect from him.

Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will still live, even if he dies.

What John 11:25 Means

The verse begins with a claim about identity. Jesus does not say that he brings resurrection or that he knows the way to it. He says, “I am the resurrection and the life.” The phrase points to the one who holds life in his own hands, so that resurrection is not a future event detached from him but something that flows from who he is.

Next comes the promise to the one who believes. The phrase “he who believes in me” describes a personal trust that rests on Jesus rather than on a belief about him alone. The result is that such a person “will still live, even if he dies.” The verse does not promise that believers will avoid physical death, since Lazarus has already died and Jesus himself will die. It promises that death does not have the final word for the one who is joined to Jesus.

What the verse does not do is spell out every detail of what that life will look like. It does not describe the afterlife step by step or settle every question people ask about heaven. It anchors hope in Jesus and leaves the details in his care, which is why it can steady a grieving heart without pretending that grief is absent.

The Context of John 11:25

John’s Gospel was written to show who Jesus is so that readers might believe and have life in his name, and this chapter is one of its most vivid displays of that purpose. The raising of Lazarus, which follows right after this conversation, becomes a sign pointing beyond itself to the greater reality Jesus describes in these words. The story is full of physical grief, delay, and tears, which keeps the hope of resurrection rooted in real loss.

Just before verse 25, Martha says that she knows her brother will rise “in the resurrection at the last day,” which was a widely held Jewish belief at the time. Jesus does not simply agree with her in general terms. He moves the hope into the present and places himself at its center. Verses 26 and 27 then press the same point with a direct question, “Do you believe this?”, and Martha’s confession that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. Read in that setting, verse 25 is not a comforting abstraction but a claim that Martha is invited to personally affirm.

Key Phrases in John 11:25

John 14:6

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me.

In this verse Jesus says he is the way, the truth, and the life, and that no one comes to the Father except through him. It echoes the claim of John 11:25 that life belongs to Jesus alone and shows that such life is found through relationship with him.

1 Corinthians 15:55-57

55 “Death, where is your sting? Hades, where is your victory?” 56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Paul celebrates the defeat of death through Christ, which is the same hope Jesus voices to Martha. Reading this passage alongside John 11:25 shows how the early church built its confidence about death on the promise that Jesus himself gives victory over it.

A Short Prayer From John 11:25

Lord Jesus, you told Martha that you are the resurrection and the life, and I want to hear those words as true for me today. Where I am grieving, afraid, or holding on to something that feels finished, speak your life into that place. Help me trust you more than I trust my own sense of what is possible. Let my faith rest on who you are rather than on what I can see right now.

Thank you that death does not have the final word for those who belong to you. Teach me to live in that confidence each day, so that I can hold my losses with open hands and look for your new life breaking through. Amen.
