John 14:13 teaches that whatever you ask in Jesus’ name, he will do, so that the Father is glorified through the Son. The promise is tied to a purpose: God’s glory, not a blank check for personal wishes. Jesus speaks these words to his disciples in the upper room, on the night before his crucifixion, as he prepares them for his departure.

Whatever you will ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

What John 14:13 Means

The phrase “whatever you will ask” is broad, but it is bounded by the words “in my name.” To ask in someone’s name in the ancient world meant to ask as their representative, with their authority and in line with their character and wishes. So Jesus is not handing out a magic formula. He is inviting prayer that flows from union with him and that aligns with who he is.

The second half explains the goal: “that the Father may be glorified in the Son.” Answered prayer, in this view, exists so that God’s character is made visible. When a request is granted in a way that points people to the Father through Jesus, the answer has done its job. The verse does not promise that every desire will be fulfilled exactly as imagined, nor that life will be free of hardship. It promises that Jesus is serious about answering prayer that seeks his purposes.

The Context of John 14:13

The Gospel of John was written, according to long-standing church tradition, by the apostle John, the disciple whom Jesus loved. It was written to strengthen believers in the identity of Jesus as the Son of God and the way of life that comes through him. Chapter 14 belongs to the farewell discourse, the extended teaching Jesus gives his followers after the Last Supper.

Just before verse 13, Jesus says that he is in the Father and the Father is in him, and that those who believe will do even greater works because he is going to the Father. Right after it, he repeats the promise in verse 14 and then speaks of love shown through obedience and of the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, who will come. Read in this setting, prayer is part of a larger relationship of love, obedience and mission, not a separate transaction.

Key Phrases in John 14:13

Matthew 7:7

“Ask, and it will be given you. Seek, and you will find. Knock, and it will be opened for you.

(WEB)

Jesus encourages persistent asking, seeking and knocking, reminding us that the Father delights to give good things to his children. Reading it beside John 14:13 reinforces that prayer is a confident, ongoing conversation with a generous God.

1 John 5:14

This is the boldness which we have toward him, that, if we ask anything according to his will, he listens to us.

(WEB)

John writes that we can be confident when we ask according to God’s will. This verse clarifies the heart of John 14:13, showing that asking in Jesus’ name naturally seeks what pleases the Father.

A Short Prayer From John 14:13

Father, thank you that you hear the prayers of those who come to you through your Son. Teach me to ask in his name, with his character in view and his purposes in mind. When I bring you my wants and worries, shape my heart so that I desire what honors you. Let my requests lead me to trust you more and to see your goodness shown clearly in the world. Whatever you answer, may your name be glorified through Jesus, in whose name I pray. Amen.
