John 14:23 teaches that love for Jesus shows itself in keeping his word, and that the one who does so receives a close, lasting relationship with the Father and the Son. The verse promises a home where God dwells with the believer, not just a visit. Jesus spoke these words to his disciples during the Last Supper, in answer to a question from Judas, the disciple who was not Iscariot.

Jesus answered him, “If a man loves me, he will keep my word. My Father will love him, and we will come to him, and make our home with him.

What John 14:23 Means

The verse begins with a condition: “If a man loves me.” Jesus is not describing a feeling alone. Love in the New Testament is expressed through loyalty and action, and here it is tied directly to keeping his word. Obedience is presented as the natural fruit of love, not a price paid to earn God’s favor.

The second part describes what follows. The Father will love the person, and Jesus says “we will come to him, and make our home with him.” The word “home” suggests permanence. Jesus is describing God choosing to live within a person’s life, not merely stopping by on occasion. The verse uses the plural “we” to include the Father and the Son together, pointing to their shared presence.

The verse does not promise a life free of trouble, nor does it guarantee that every prayer will be answered in the way we expect. It describes the relationship itself: love shown through faithfulness, and the closeness of God’s presence in return.

The Context of John 14:23

John wrote his Gospel to readers who already believed or were considering belief in Jesus as the Son of God. Traditionally it is attributed to the apostle John, who was present at the Last Supper. The setting is the upper room on the night before the crucifixion, where Jesus prepares his disciples for his departure.

The verses just before this one, John 14:20-21, speak of mutual indwelling: “you in me, and I in you.” The verses after it, John 14:24-26, introduce the Holy Spirit as the Counselor who will teach and remind the disciples. Read in this setting, the promise of God making a home with us is tied to the continuing work of the Spirit after Jesus leaves. The presence described in verse 23 is not only a future hope but something the disciples would experience through the Spirit in their daily lives.

Key Phrases in John 14:23

Psalm 46:10

“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted in the earth.”

This verse invites stillness before God, which pairs well with John 14:23. Both passages describe a recognition of God’s presence as something to be received with quiet trust and reverence.

1 John 4:12

No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God remains in us, and his love has been perfected in us.

John connects God’s indwelling with love for others, showing that the presence promised in John 14:23 becomes visible when believers love one another in practice.

A Short Prayer From John 14:23

Lord Jesus, you have said that those who love you will keep your word, and that you and the Father will come to make your home with them. Help me to love you not only with words but with the choices I make each day. When I am tempted to ignore your teaching, remind me of the closeness you offer to those who follow you.

Make your home in me in a way that shapes how I speak, work, and treat the people around me. Let your Spirit teach me and bring your words back to mind when I need them most. Thank you that your presence is not distant but near to those who belong to you. Amen.
