BIBLEREADER // ELIZABETH KIM

John 14:6 means that Jesus himself is the way to God the Father, the source of truth, and the giver of real life, so no one reaches God apart from him. Jesus spoke these words to his disciple Thomas on the night before his crucifixion, during the farewell conversation recorded in John 13 through 17.

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me.

What John 14:6 Means

The verse begins with three titles, “the way, the truth, and the life,” and each one answers a different need. A way is a road you can walk along to arrive somewhere, so Jesus is presented as the route by which a person comes to God. Truth points to reliable knowledge about who God is and what he is like, which Jesus reveals. Life refers to the kind of existence that God gives, a relationship with him that is not ended by death.

The second sentence makes the claim exclusive: “No one comes to the Father, except through me.” Jesus is not saying that people cannot know anything true about God outside of Christianity, nor is he setting out a detailed theory of who will be saved. He is saying that access to the Father is found in him and nowhere else. The verse describes a relationship with God, not a list of religious achievements.

The verse also does not promise an easy life, a removal of suffering, or success in our plans. What it promises is a secure route to the Father and a life that flows from knowing him. Those are large promises, but they are not promises of comfort in every circumstance.

The Context of John 14:6

The Gospel of John was written by a close follower of Jesus, traditionally identified as the apostle John, and it was likely composed toward the end of the first century. It was addressed to a community of believers who needed to be assured of who Jesus was. The chapters before this verse show Jesus preparing his disciples for his departure, and he tells them he is going to prepare a place for them.

The surrounding verses explain why the verse matters so much. Thomas admits that he does not know where Jesus is going or how to get there, and that honest question gives Jesus the opening to reply. Philip then asks to see the Father, and Jesus answers that seeing him is the same as seeing the Father. Read in this setting, John 14:6 is Jesus’ answer to the disciples’ confusion: the way they lack is not a map but a person, and that person has been with them all along.

This verse says there is one God and one mediator between God and people, the man Christ Jesus. It shows that the exclusive access to God described in John 14:6 is rooted in the unique role Jesus plays as the one who stands between humanity and the Father.

Hebrews 10:19-20

19 Having therefore, brothers, boldness to enter into the holy place by the blood of Jesus, 20 by the way which he dedicated for us, a new and living way, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh…

(WEB)

These verses describe a new and living way opened for believers through Jesus, giving confidence to draw near to God. They extend the image of the way from John 14:6 by showing how Christ’s sacrifice made that path open.

A Short Prayer From John 14:6

Lord Jesus, you are the way to the Father, and I am grateful that I do not have to find my own route to him. When I feel lost or unsure of what to do next, remind me that you are the one who leads me. Help me to trust you with the truth about who you are, and to live as someone who knows the life that comes only from you.

Teach me to come to the Father through you each day, in prayer, in worship, and in the ordinary moments of my work and my relationships. Keep my eyes on you when the path is hard to see. Thank you for making a way where there was none. Amen.
