John 15:24 means that Jesus’ miracles and works were evidence that revealed who he was, so that rejecting him was not due to a lack of proof. Jesus spoke these words to his disciples on the night before his crucifixion, as part of his teaching about how the world would treat those who follow him.

If I hadn’t done among them the works which no one else did, they wouldn’t have had sin. But now have they seen and also hated both me and my Father.

What John 15:24 Means

Jesus begins with a conditional: if he had not done works among the people that no one else had done, they would not carry the guilt they now carry. The “works” are the signs and deeds that showed God’s power and character through him, such as healing the sick and feeding the crowds. The verse does not say the people were innocent before he came. It says that his works made their sin plainer, because they now had clear evidence before them and still refused it.

The second half states the result: they have seen, and they have hated both Jesus and the Father. Seeing and hating are set side by side, which shows that the problem was not a shortage of information. The verse does not promise that every person who sees a sign will believe, and it does not explain the inner reasons each person rejected Jesus. It describes the situation Jesus faced and what his disciples could expect from the same world.

The Context of John 15:24

John’s Gospel is traditionally attributed to the apostle John, who was one of Jesus’ closest companions. The original audience included the disciples in the upper room, and the wider church that later read the Gospel. Chapters 13 through 17 are Jesus’ farewell discourse, given as he prepared to leave his followers, so the words carry the weight of a final instruction.

The verses just before and after speak of the world’s hatred toward disciples, who will suffer “for my name’s sake” because the world does not know the one who sent Jesus. Verse 25 then connects the hatred to an Old Testament pattern, and verses 26 and 27 turn to the Spirit who will testify and to the disciples who will bear witness. Read in that frame, verse 24 explains why the rejection is serious and why the disciples can speak with confidence about what they have seen.

Key Phrases in John 15:24

John 5:36

But the testimony which I have is greater than that of John, for the works which the Father gave me to accomplish, the very works that I do, testify about me, that the Father has sent me.

Here Jesus says his works bear witness that the Father has sent him. Reading it beside John 15:24 shows the same argument from deeds to identity, and it confirms that the works were meant to point people toward God.

John 10:37-38

37 If I don’t do the works of my Father, don’t believe me. 38 But if I do them, though you don’t believe me, believe the works; that you may know and believe that the Father is in me, and I in the Father.”

In this passage Jesus asks that his works be considered even if his words are doubted, and he links the works to the unity of the Father and the Son. It deepens the connection between the signs and the relationship Jesus claims.

A Short Prayer From John 15:24

Lord, you have shown me who you are through your Son, through his words and works and the faithful witness of those who followed him. Keep me from hardening my heart when the evidence is clear. Where I have resisted you, soften me and bring me to honest repentance. Help me to receive what you have already made plain, and give me courage to speak about you to people who do not yet see. Let my life point to you the way the works of Jesus pointed to the Father. Amen.
