John 16:11 says that judgment has already been settled, because the ruler of this world has been judged. Jesus means that the power opposing God has already been defeated, so believers can face hard days knowing the outcome is not in doubt. Jesus speaks this to his disciples on the night before his arrest, as part of a longer farewell conversation about the Holy Spirit who would come after him.

About judgment, because the prince of this world has been judged.

What John 16:11 Means

The word “judgment” here means a verdict, a decision about who is right and who is guilty. Jesus is saying that a verdict has been reached against the one who has ruled over human rebellion. He does not say that evil has disappeared or that suffering will end immediately. He says the final result has been decided in God’s favor.

The phrase “prince of this world” points to Satan, or more broadly to the spiritual force that opposes God’s rule in the human world. Jesus uses the past tense: “has been judged.” In his mind, the cross and the resurrection are already accomplishing this verdict, even though history has not yet fully caught up. The verse does not promise a painless life. It promises that the struggle has an ending already written.

The Context of John 16:11

The Gospel of John was written, traditionally attributed to the apostle John, for readers who already believed or were considering belief in Jesus. In chapters 13 through 17, Jesus talks with his disciples in the upper room, preparing them for his death and their future without him. Verse 11 belongs to a short section where he explains three things the Spirit will do in the world: convict about sin, righteousness and judgment.

Read in that setting, the verse is not a stand-alone statement about cosmic events. It answers a question the disciples are likely asking: how will the world be shown that Jesus was right? The Spirit will make the verdict clear. Verse 12 then shows Jesus promising that the Spirit will guide the disciples into all truth, so the judgment already declared becomes something they can understand and speak about.

Key Phrases in John 16:11

Colossians 2:15

Having stripped the principalities and the powers, he made a show of them openly, triumphing over them in it.

(WEB)

This verse describes Christ disarming the powers and authorities at the cross and leading them in triumph. It expands the idea in John 16:11 by showing how the defeat of spiritual opposition is connected to the work of Jesus himself.

Romans 8:37

No, in all these things, we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.

(WEB)

Paul writes here that believers are more than conquerors through the one who loved them. It shows how the settled victory described in John 16:11 becomes lived confidence for people facing pressure and hardship.

A Short Prayer From John 16:11

Lord Jesus, you spoke about judgment on the night before the cross, and you knew how much your disciples needed to hear it. I bring you the places in my life where fear feels louder than truth. Remind me that the ruler of this world has already been judged, and that your verdict stands over every struggle I face today. Give me courage to act with integrity even when the outcome is unclear, and help me rest in the certainty that you hold the final word. Amen.
