BIBLEREADER // ELIZABETH KIM

John 3:23 tells us that John the Baptist was baptizing people at Enon, a place near Salim, and he chose it because there was plenty of water. The verse also reports that people came to him and were baptized, showing that his ministry was drawing real crowds. The verse is narrated by the Gospel writer John, who records this detail in the middle of a conversation about baptism and purification.

John also was baptizing in Enon near Salim, because there was much water there. They came, and were baptized.

What John 3:23 Means

The phrase “John also was baptizing” is a little pointed. The word “also” links John’s work to the ministry of Jesus described just before it, in which Jesus had been baptizing in Judea. Both men were active at the same time, and the Gospel wants you to notice that the two ministries ran side by side.

“In Enon near Salim, because there was much water there” is a practical detail. Baptism in that period was often done in flowing or deep water, so the location was chosen for its practical needs. The verse does not explain the symbolism of the water here, but it shows that John planned his ministry around real, physical conditions.

“They came, and were baptized” describes the response of ordinary people. The verse does not say how many came or why each person came, and it does not promise that any particular person would be changed by baptism. It simply records that people responded to John’s call.

The Context of John 3:23

The Gospel of John was written to show who Jesus is, and it often places Jesus next to John the Baptist to clarify their roles. Traditionally the author is identified as the apostle John, though many scholars hold that the Gospel took shape within a community that remembered him. The original audience was likely a Christian community that needed to understand Jesus’ identity and how John’s ministry fit into God’s plan.

Just before verse 23, Jesus leaves for the land of Judea and baptizes there, and just after it, verse 24 notes that John had not yet been thrown into prison. Verse 25 then describes a dispute about purification between John’s disciples and some Jews. Read in that setting, verse 23 is a snapshot of two overlapping ministries, which sets up the debate in verses 25 and 26 about who is drawing the crowds.

Key Phrases in John 3:23

Matthew 3:6

They were baptized by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins.

(WEB)

This verse describes people coming to John at the Jordan River, confessing their sins, and being baptized. It fills out the picture from John 3:23 by showing the same ministry from another Gospel’s perspective.

John 3:30

He must increase, but I must decrease.

(WEB)

Here John the Baptist speaks of Jesus rising while he himself must decrease. Reading it beside John 3:23 helps you see the humility with which John understood his role alongside Jesus.

A Short Prayer From John 3:23

Lord, you saw people coming to the water and being baptized in a real place, and you were present in that ordinary moment. Help me to take my own steps of faith with the same seriousness, whether that means a decision I am still weighing or a commitment I have already made. Give me humility like John’s, so that I am content to point people to you and to let your work grow as you choose.

Thank you for the ordinary details of Scripture that remind me your story is rooted in real places and real lives. Keep me faithful in the small places where I serve you today. Amen.
